The Mercedes-Benz B-Class is well-regarded for its spaciousness, comfort, and competitive pricing in the used market. Owners consistently enjoy the smooth driving experience and excellent fuel economy, which makes it a practical choice for many. However, some drivers point out issues like excessive road noise and feel that it can be a bit pricey compared to other models in the Mercedes lineup. Since the original A Class was converted to a saloon, this is the only reasonably-priced hatchback available from an up- market manufacturer. It is spacious, easy to drive, very well equipped (make sure that you get the SE version), available with a wide range of extras and very reasonably priced, especially on the second-hand market. The rear seats fold flat to give a huge carrying capacity, comparable to a large estate. The fuel consumption is very reasonable for a car of this size. The performance is not startling, even in the AMG version, but it handles well and makes an ideal family car.

Mercedes-Benz B-Class (2011-2018) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Unusually cheap to buy for a premium-badged car | Dull looks and bland to drive |
| Lots of cabin space | Sportier models have a very firm ride |
| Affordable running costs | Not as clever inside as the best MPVs |
Quick Summary
The Mercedes-Benz B-Class (2011-2018) is a spacious and well-built family car that offers premium badge appeal at affordable used prices. The second-generation model arrived with sharper styling, improved interior quality, and a more comfortable driving experience than its predecessor. With a generous 486-litre boot expanding to 1,545 litres with rear seats folded, wide-opening rear doors, and excellent headroom throughout, it's particularly appealing to families and older buyers seeking practicality and comfort.
The B-Class prioritises comfort and ease of use over driving excitement, featuring light steering, good visibility, and a commanding driving position. Fuel economy is respectable, with petrol models returning around 50mpg and diesels capable of more than 60mpg on longer journeys. Routine servicing is straightforward through Mercedes-Benz dealers or independent specialists, with insurance costs generally reasonable for a premium family car. As a used buy, the B-Class has become increasingly appealing, offering genuine value for budget-conscious buyers seeking a spacious, comfortable, and dependable everyday car.
Best for: Families seeking a spacious, premium-badged car with excellent practicality, older buyers preferring a higher seating position, and those wanting affordable running costs with a quality cabin.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising driving excitement, those sensitive to firm suspension in sportier models, or those seeking the clever interior solutions found in dedicated MPVs.

The Verdict
You should buy the B-Class if: You're seeking a spacious, premium-badged family car with excellent practicality, prefer a higher seating position, or want affordable running costs with quality cabin build.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise driving excitement, are sensitive to firm suspension in sportier models, or require the clever interior solutions found in dedicated MPVs.
Competitive Position: The Mercedes-Benz B-Class (2011-2018) offers genuine appeal as an affordable premium-badged family car with excellent space and comfort. Whilst rivals like the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, Volkswagen Touran, and Citroën C4 Picasso may score higher for driving dynamics and user satisfaction, the B-Class stands out for its premium badge and value proposition. The Citroën C4 Picasso offers superior value deals, whilst the Touran and BMW provide more engaging driving experiences. However, for budget-conscious buyers prioritising practicality and comfort over excitement, the B-Class remains a sensible and dependable choice.
