Mercedes C-Class (2022-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| The PHEV has a class-leading electric range | Not as sharp to drive as a BMW 3 Series |
| Beautifully finished interior | There are roomier cars for less money |
| MBUX infotainment system looks stunning | Bland styling |
Quick Summary
The Mercedes C-Class is now in its fifth generation, offering a choice of mild-hybrid petrol and diesel engines, plus a plug-in hybrid with an impressive 68-mile official WLTP pure-electric range—the longest in its class by a significant margin. All variants feature a nine-speed automatic gearbox as standard. The C-Class boasts understated classiness with slick styling, though it can be easily confused with the larger E-Class. It's a composed, refined executive saloon that delivers good driving dynamics, particularly in the C300e PHEV variant, which combines quiet electric driving with smooth petrol engine integration and responsive handling in Sport mode.
The C-Class is well equipped as standard, with entry-level Sport models featuring LED headlights, reversing camera, dual-zone climate control, wireless phone charging, and heated seats. The MBUX infotainment system is excellent, offering an 11.9-inch digital driver's display and 12-inch touchscreen with voice control, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Running costs are competitive, with the diesel C220d achieving up to 60mpg, whilst the C300e PHEV offers the best efficiency and falls into a lower tax band for company car users. However, interior space is tighter than some rivals, with the PHEV's 315-litre boot being smaller than average family hatchbacks.
Best for: Premium car buyers seeking a refined, well-equipped executive saloon with excellent technology, particularly those interested in the PHEV's long electric range and low company car tax benefits.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising sharp handling like the BMW 3 Series, maximum interior space, four-wheel drive options on non-performance models, or budget-conscious buyers seeking better value alternatives.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mercedes C-Class | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 32.5% | 4.4/5 |
| Audi A4 | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 33.7% | 4.4/5 |
| BMW 3 Series | 5/5 | 4.4/5 | 34.1% | 4.5/5 |
| Jaguar XE | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 33.2% | 4.2/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the C-Class if: You seek a refined, well-equipped premium executive saloon with excellent technology, or you're interested in the PHEV's class-leading electric range and low company car tax benefits.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise sharp handling like the BMW 3 Series, maximum interior space, four-wheel drive options on non-performance models, or better value for money.
Competitive Position: The Mercedes C-Class is a solid contender in the compact executive saloon market, offering beautiful interior finishes, an outstanding MBUX infotainment system, and the class-leading C300e PHEV with 68 miles of electric range. However, the BMW 3 Series edges ahead with superior driving dynamics and a higher expert rating, whilst the Audi A4 offers more spacious interiors and excellent user satisfaction. The C-Class remains a compelling choice for those prioritising premium quality, technology, and plug-in hybrid efficiency, though rivals offer better handling, practicality, or value depending on your priorities.

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class has consistently impressed owners across various model years with its blend of luxury, reliability, and advanced technology. Drivers often rave about the comfort and performance, noting it as a great option for long journeys and daily drives alike. However, some concerns arise regarding repair costs and the usability of certain tech features, with a few feeling that the comfort doesn't always meet the expectations set for a luxury vehicle.

What people say
Excellent vehicle with a good range of standard features included (like rear camera, Bluetooth, cruise control). If you want front parking sensors or heated seats, get an SE Executive or Sport varient.
As amazing car, it replaced an earlier CLK 220 DCI’s and the difference is unbelievable, it is so quiet, very economical, a dream to drive, I am still learning about the numerous features
The value is top notch with the mileage high it's greatly a fantastic buy
Previous owners have adulterated the style and the design by highlighting in lime green the distinctive interior and some exterior features I’d hate to find out what the original stylist and the original top gear three think of the modifications.
Lovely roomy car, plenty of room for everybody. Good boot space. I loved mine and would buy again.
