Mercedes-Benz CLA (2026) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Long range on EV	Interior is a bit plasticky
Great to drive	Tight rear passenger access
Comparably well priced	Others have a bigger boot

Quick Summary

The Mercedes-Benz CLA (2026) is a landmark electric car that brings together genuine long-distance range, sophisticated design, and cutting-edge interior technology in a compact, desirable package. The CLA 250+ saloon features a 268bhp electric motor, an 85kWh usable battery, and can achieve up to 484 miles on a full charge with rapid charging at up to 320kW. The range now includes a smaller 58kWh battery option, an all-wheel-drive CLA 350 4Matic, petrol-hybrid models, and a flagship Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 4Matic+ with 671bhp. The two-speed gearbox, clever aerodynamics, and advanced charging hardware demonstrate genuine engineering ambition.

Despite its sleek, coupe-like styling, the CLA is surprisingly practical for daily use. The saloon offers a 405-litre boot with a flat floor and 40:20:40 split rear seats, whilst the CLA Shooting Brake provides 455 litres (1,290 litres with seats folded). The interior accommodates four adults comfortably, though headroom is compromised in the rear due to the raked roofline. The CLA 250+ delivers responsive, smooth driving with excellent ride comfort and precise steering, making it enjoyable to drive without being over the top. Equipment levels are generous, with even entry-level models featuring a panoramic roof, heated front seats, and advanced infotainment systems.

Best for: Buyers seeking a premium electric saloon with exceptional range, sophisticated technology, and engaging driving dynamics; those wanting a desirable compact car that feels futuristic and looks the part.

Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising maximum interior space, those needing a large boot, or drivers over six feet tall seeking generous rear headroom; those wanting the most affordable electric car option.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the CLA if: You're seeking a premium electric saloon with exceptional range, sophisticated technology, and engaging driving dynamics, or want a desirable compact car that feels futuristic and looks the part.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum interior space, need a large boot, require generous rear headroom, or are looking for the most affordable electric car option.

Competitive Position: The Mercedes-Benz CLA (2026) is one of the best electric saloons on sale, offering a compelling blend of long-distance range, premium design, and cutting-edge technology. Whilst the Tesla Model 3 and BMW i4 match or exceed it in expert ratings, the CLA delivers superior value with its generous equipment levels and competitive pricing. The Polestar 2 offers a classier interior, but the CLA's sophisticated engineering, two-speed gearbox, and outstanding range make it a landmark achievement for Mercedes. For buyers wanting a premium electric car that feels as futuristic as it looks, the CLA deserves a place near the top of the shortlist.
