Mercedes-Benz Citan (2023-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Desirable image	Load-carrying capability is competitive rather than class-leading
Reasonably well equipped	Not cheap, and feels no posher inside than rival vans
	eCitan has a limited range

Quick Summary

The Mercedes-Benz Citan is a small panel van that combines practicality with prestige. This second-generation model is jointly developed with the Renault-Nissan alliance, sharing mechanicals with the Renault Kangoo and Nissan Townstar, but distinguished by the three-pointed star badge. Available in two body lengths (L1 and L2), it offers a choice between a 1.5-litre diesel engine with manual or automatic transmission, or an all-electric eCitan variant. Two trim levels—Progressive and Premium—provide flexibility for different business needs.

The Citan strikes a good balance between ride and handling, with responsive steering and effective suspension that absorbs road imperfections well. The diesel achieves respectable fuel economy of around 51-53mpg, whilst the eCitan delivers a combined range of 175 miles on a full charge. Equipment levels are generous as standard, including air-conditioning, reversing sensors and camera, plus the intuitive MBUX infotainment system. However, load-carrying capability is competitive rather than class-leading, and pricing sits at the premium end of the segment. The main appeal lies in the professional image the Mercedes badge conveys to clients.

Best for: Tradespeople and small business owners seeking a professional image, those valuing good equipment levels, and operators wanting a pleasant driving experience in a compact van.

Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising maximum load-carrying capacity, those on tight budgets, or operators requiring extensive range (eCitan users).

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Citan if: You're a tradesperson or small business owner seeking a professional image, value good equipment levels, and want a pleasant driving experience in a compact van.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum load-carrying capacity, operate on a tight budget, or require extensive range with an electric van.

Competitive Position: The Mercedes-Benz Citan is a very competitive offering in the small van sector, though not class-leading. It excels in driving refinement and equipment provision, particularly in eCitan form, and the three-pointed star badge conveys professionalism to clients. However, it trails some rivals in load-carrying capability and sits at the premium end of the pricing spectrum. Competitors like the Ford Transit Courier and Volkswagen Caddy offer more load space for less money, whilst the mechanically identical Nissan Townstar provides similar capabilities without the Mercedes premium. Nevertheless, for businesses where image matters, the Citan's prestige factor justifies the additional investment.
