The Mercedes-Benz G-Class combines old-school off-road toughness with modern luxury in a way few other SUVs can match. Despite its military origins and upright styling, the latest G-Class is far more refined and comfortable than older versions, while still being satisfyingly rugged and distinctive. You can even get it in fully electric guise.

It remains hugely capable off-road, but most buyers are likely to be drawn by the G-Class’s sense of occasion, luxurious cabin and unmistakable road presence. Running costs are predictably enormous and it’s nowhere near as sharp to drive as some luxury SUV rivals. However, if you want something charismatic, extravagant and genuinely iconic, the G-Class still stands in a class of its own.
