Mercedes-Benz G-Class (2018-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Amazing off-road ability	Hugely expensive to buy and run
Eye-catching retro styling	AMG versions are very thirsty
Luxurious cabin with lots of space	Not as sharp to drive as a Porsche Cayenne

Quick Summary

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class (2018-present) is one of the most distinctive luxury SUVs available today. Tracing its roots back to the 1970s military Geländewagen, the current generation retains the iconic upright, boxy styling whilst incorporating modern luxury and technology. It blends serious off-road capability with opulent refinement, featuring a ladder-frame chassis, low-range gearbox and locking differentials. Buyers can choose from powerful petrol and diesel engines, Mercedes-AMG high-performance variants, or the fully electric G 580 with EQ Technology offering 291 miles of range.

The latest G-Class is considerably more refined and comfortable than its predecessors, with an exceptionally well-built interior featuring Mercedes-Benz's MBUX infotainment system, heated leather seats, ambient lighting and advanced driver assistance technology. Whilst it remains hugely expensive to purchase and run, with substantial servicing costs and premium insurance groups, the G-Class retains its value exceptionally well. It's not the most rational choice, but few vehicles combine old-school character, opulent luxury and commanding road presence quite like this one.

Best for: Buyers seeking a distinctive luxury SUV with genuine off-road capability, those valuing iconic styling and heritage, and owners unconcerned by running costs.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those prioritising driving dynamics over presence, or drivers seeking the most practical large SUV.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the G-Class if: You seek a distinctive luxury SUV with genuine off-road capability, value iconic styling and heritage, and are unconcerned by running costs.

Consider alternatives if: You are budget-conscious, prioritise driving dynamics over presence, or require the most practical large SUV.

Competitive Position: The Mercedes-Benz G-Class (2018-present) occupies a unique position in the luxury SUV market. Whilst rivals like the Porsche Cayenne offer sharper driving dynamics and the Land Rover Defender provides greater practicality, the G-Class stands apart through its iconic heritage and distinctive character. The Bentley Bentayga offers comparable luxury, yet the G-Class's superior off-road capability and commanding presence justify its premium positioning. For buyers valuing individuality and old-school charm alongside modern refinement, the G-Class remains unmatched, despite its substantial purchase and running costs.
