Mitsubishi ASX (2010-2020) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
More rugged than most crossovers	The 2.2-litre diesel needs frequent servicing
Proper 4x4 versions are available	Dated and dull driving experience
Well equipped whichever model you choose	Poorly finished cabin

Quick Summary

The Mitsubishi ASX (2010-2020) is a practical compact SUV that launched as a rival to the Nissan Qashqai and Skoda Yeti. Available in front-wheel-drive and proper 4x4 versions, it offers an upright driving position and SUV styling with lower running costs than full-fat offroaders. The straightforward line-up features a choice of petrol and diesel engines, with a 442-litre boot and generous standard equipment across all specification levels, including air-conditioning, alloy wheels, and dual-stage airbags even on entry-level models.

The ASX prioritises practicality and value over driving dynamics, with a comfortable but unremarkable ride. A 2013 facelift introduced a more powerful 2.2-litre diesel with automatic transmission and four-wheel drive, ideal for towing or motorway driving. Later updates brought a 1.6-litre diesel for improved economy and a final 2.0-litre petrol option. Running costs are competitive, particularly with the frugal 1.6-litre diesel achieving around 55mpg. Insurance groups start from 13 of 50, three groups lower than the equivalent Qashqai. However, the 2.2-litre diesel requires more frequent servicing than most rivals.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a practical, well-equipped compact SUV with genuine 4x4 capability, and those prioritising economy and low running costs over driving excitement.

Not ideal for: Drivers wanting an engaging driving experience, those seeking a premium cabin finish, or buyers requiring the latest technology and spacious interiors found in newer rivals.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the ASX if: You're seeking a practical, well-equipped compact SUV with genuine 4x4 capability, prioritising economy and low running costs over driving excitement, or looking for a budget-friendly used option.

Consider alternatives if: You want an engaging driving experience, a premium cabin finish, or the latest technology and spacious interiors found in newer rivals like the Skoda Yeti.

Competitive Position: The Mitsubishi ASX (2010-2020) is a capable compact SUV that offers genuine 4x4 capability and excellent value as a used buy. However, it lags behind rivals in driving dynamics and cabin quality. Whilst the Skoda Yeti, Renault Captur, and Nissan Qashqai all score higher on expert ratings and overall CarGurus ratings, the ASX remains a sensible choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking practicality and ruggedness. The ASX shows its age compared with newer competitors, but its strong reliability, generous equipment levels, and lower insurance costs make it a worthwhile consideration for those prioritising substance over style.
