The leaf is a great vehicle, well built, sturdy, quiet with all the requisite features you want or need in a car. The range is good, and best of all you can charge it at home

It should be remembered that the Leaf is on its second generation model and has sold nearly half a million. It may be short on chargeable miles, but has 10 years of construction/usage behind it. It has plenty of room, is well equipped and has good performance, with a very good reputation for reliability. Because of this, it stands alone in the market place and is a steal on the second-hand market.

Battery capacity is a big problem. with full heating on and driving for 1.7 miles, the range just dropped by 14 miles! Not great to use in cold countries even for short trips. Mileage anxiety will be a constant stress. Otherwise, the car drives fantastic!

Nissan Leaf (2017-2024) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Lots of space in the cabin | Not compatible with CCS charging |
| Affordable for a family EV | Driving position is short on adjustment |
| Extremely cheap to run | Many rivals will go further on a full charge |
Quick Summary
The Nissan Leaf (2017-2024), the second-generation model, represents a significant step forward in electric family hatchbacks. With sharp, modern styling that doesn't deliberately stand out, it offers a practical 435-litre boot and generous passenger space—more than a Ford Focus. The 40kWh battery provides an official 168-mile range, whilst the 62kWh Leaf e+ extends this to 239 miles. Standard equipment includes an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, rear-view camera, digital dials, and autonomous emergency braking. The Leaf e+ and Tekna models add semi-autonomous ProPilot functionality.
Running costs are exceptionally low at around 5p per mile on standard electricity tariffs, with servicing available from just £100 for minor work. The 148bhp electric motor delivers responsive acceleration and smooth motorway performance. However, the restrictive driving position—lacking steering wheel reach adjustment—may frustrate taller drivers. The lack of CCS rapid charging compatibility is a notable drawback compared to newer rivals, though the Leaf remains more available and affordable than longer-range alternatives. Depreciation is strong due to solid used-market demand.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a practical family EV, those prioritising low running costs and cabin space, and drivers with access to home charging.
Not ideal for: Those requiring maximum range, drivers needing CCS rapid charging compatibility, or taller individuals requiring extensive driving position adjustment.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nissan Leaf | 3/5 | 3.8/5 | 31.2% | 4.1/5 |
| Kia e-Niro | 5/5 | 4.6/5 | 35.7% | 4.6/5 |
| Renault Zoe | 3/5 | 4.7/5 | 33.2% | 4.1/5 |
| Peugeot e-2008 | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 42.6% | 4.5/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Leaf if: You're seeking an affordable family EV with excellent cabin space, low running costs, and strong availability, or you prioritise practicality over maximum range.
Consider alternatives if: You require maximum driving range, CCS rapid charging compatibility, or extensive driving position adjustment options.
Competitive Position: The Nissan Leaf (2017-2024) is a sensible, practical choice in the electric family hatchback market, offering excellent value and generous interior space. Whilst newer rivals like the Kia e-Niro and Peugeot e-2008 offer superior range and charging compatibility, the Leaf remains more affordable and readily available. Its exceptional running costs and strong depreciation make it an intelligent purchase for budget-conscious buyers. However, the lack of CCS charging and restrictive driving position are notable compromises compared to the competition. The Leaf is best suited to those with home charging access and modest daily mileage requirements.
