Nissan Note (2013-2017) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
More spacious and practical than a conventional supermini	Some safety kit was reserved for upper trim levels
Economical to run	Not as reliable as you'd expect
Comfortable ride and handling	A Ford B-Max is more fun to drive

Quick Summary

The Nissan Note (2013-2017) is a compact MPV that bridges the gap between a conventional supermini and a family car. Built in Sunderland, this second-generation Note adopts a more supermini-like appearance whilst retaining the spacious interior of its predecessor. The sliding rear bench seat offers flexible legroom and boot space adjustment of up to 150mm, and rear doors open to nearly 90 degrees for easy access. However, the high driving position lacks reach adjustment on the steering wheel, which may prove uncomfortable for taller drivers. Visibility is excellent thanks to large glazed areas and the airy cabin design.

The Note excels in running costs, with a simple engine range comprising a 1.2-litre petrol unit (available in naturally aspirated 78bhp or supercharged DIG-S 97bhp variants) and a 1.5 dCi diesel engine producing 89bhp. Official fuel consumption figures reach 78.5mpg for the diesel and up to 65.6mpg for the supercharged petrol. CO2 emissions are impressively low, resulting in minimal tax costs—as little as £20 annually for the base petrol engine. Insurance groups range from 6 to 10, and fixed-price servicing at Nissan dealers keeps maintenance costs predictable. On the road, the Note handles competently with a compliant ride and light steering, though it doesn't match the Ford Fiesta for driving dynamics.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking spacious, practical transport; families requiring flexible interior configurations; and those prioritising economical running costs and comfortable daily driving.

Not ideal for: Drivers wanting premium handling characteristics, those requiring comprehensive safety equipment as standard, or buyers seeking maximum driving engagement.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Note if: You're seeking a spacious, practical vehicle on a budget with economical running costs and comfortable everyday driving characteristics.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise premium driving dynamics, require comprehensive safety equipment as standard, or want maximum driving engagement and fun.

Competitive Position: The Nissan Note (2013-2017) occupies a unique niche between conventional superminis and compact MPVs, offering excellent practicality and value for money. Whilst it doesn't match the Ford B-Max for driving enjoyment or the Honda Jazz for reliability, the Note's flexible interior, low running costs, and affordable purchase price make it an intelligent choice for budget-conscious families and commuters. Its positioning has historically confused buyers, which has worked in owners' favour by keeping prices competitive and availability high on the used market. Read our full Nissan Note Review
