Omoda 9 Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Fantastic interior quality	Some ergonomic frustrations
Big and spacious	Not as polished to drive as the best luxury SUVs
Very aggressive pricing given what you get	Lazy throttle responses

Quick Summary

The Omoda 9 is the flagship SUV from Chery's new Omoda brand, arriving in the UK in late 2024. This large, nearly 4.8-metre plug-in hybrid offers exceptional value, delivering the space and equipment of a top-spec Range Rover Velar at entry-level Range Rover Evoque pricing. The single Noble trim level comes comprehensively equipped with 134 LED daytime running lights, a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control, heated and ventilated seats, a 540-degree camera system, and dual 12.3-inch touchscreens. The interior quality is genuinely impressive, with soft-touch dashboard materials, chrome trim, wood inserts, and convincing vegan leather throughout.

Powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with two electric motors and a 34.5kWh battery, the Omoda 9 produces 443bhp and achieves 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds. The PHEV system offers up to 93 miles of electric-only range, making it ideal for daily commuting with minimal fuel consumption. Refinement is excellent, with virtually silent electric running and a muted petrol engine. The ride is comfortable and handling competent, though not quite as polished as premium rivals. Boot space reaches 660 litres, expanding to 1,783 litres with the rear seats folded. Some infotainment quirks remain, and throttle response can feel lazy, but overall it represents remarkable value for a spacious, well-equipped family SUV.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a large, well-equipped SUV with low running costs, families prioritising space and practicality, and those wanting premium features at mainstream prices.

Not ideal for: Buyers seeking the most polished driving dynamics, those wanting a premium badge, or those who value intuitive infotainment systems.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Omoda 9 if: You're seeking a large, well-equipped SUV with exceptional value, prioritise space and practicality for family use, or want premium features at mainstream prices with low running costs.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the most polished driving dynamics, desire a premium badge, or require an intuitive infotainment system without ergonomic frustrations.

Competitive Position: The Omoda 9 stands out in the premium SUV market as an exceptional value proposition. Whilst the Range Rover Velar, Volvo XC60, and BMW X3 offer more refined driving experiences and stronger brand prestige, they command significantly higher prices for comparable or lesser equipment. The Omoda 9 delivers a spacious, beautifully finished interior, comprehensive standard equipment, and impressive refinement at a fraction of the cost. Its plug-in hybrid powertrain offers genuine running cost advantages for daily commuters. Though not quite matching premium rivals for driving polish or infotainment intuitiveness, the Omoda 9 represents outstanding value for budget-conscious buyers unwilling to compromise on space, comfort, or equipment.
