The new Peugeot 408 is a mid-sized, five-door ‘fastback’, that blends saloon, hatchback, coupe and SUV body shapes. It’s available with a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol, or two plug-in hybrids, while pricing, size and its broad crossover styling put it in contention with everything from family SUVs like the Nissan Qashqai and Audi Q3, through to hatchbacks and estates like the VW Golf and Peugeot’s own 308 hatch and 308 SW, and even executive saloons like the BMW 3 Series. Regardless of what you categorise it as, the Peugeot 408 is practical yet really striking, has a really classy interior and competitive pricing. It’s an interesting and capable, family-appropriate executive car.
