Peugeot 408 Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Unconventionally stylish looks	Driving position won't suit everyone
High-quality interior	Rear visibility is terrible
Strong on practicality	Steering can feel twitchy

Quick Summary

The Peugeot 408 is a refreshingly different mid-sized family car that blends elements of crossover, coupé, hatchback and saloon design. Its striking angular styling, with distinctive grille and LED running lights, sets it apart from conventional rivals. The 408 offers a smart, high-quality interior with generous standard equipment, including a responsive 10.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and dual-zone climate control. Despite its pseudo-SUV appearance, it's nearly 4.7 metres long—slightly shorter than a BMW 3 Series—yet feels noticeably larger inside with excellent rear legroom and a respectable 471–536 litres of boot space depending on powertrain.

The 408 is comfortable and relaxing to drive, with a pliant suspension that handles corners tidily without sacrificing ride quality. The range is now fully electrified, offering mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric options, making it an appealing choice for those seeking lower running costs. Whilst it may not match the BMW 3 Series for engaging handling or offer more practicality than conventional estates and SUVs, the 408's unique styling, quality interior and electrified powertrains make it a compelling proposition for buyers who value allure and comfort over pure practicality.

Best for: Buyers seeking a stylish, comfortable and distinctive alternative to conventional family cars, those prioritising quality interiors and modern technology, and drivers interested in electrified powertrains.

Not ideal for: Those requiring maximum rear headroom or boot space, drivers who prefer conventional estate or SUV practicality, or buyers uncomfortable with unconventional driving positions and limited rear visibility.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the 408 if: You seek a stylish, comfortable and distinctive alternative to conventional family cars, prioritise quality interiors and modern technology, or are interested in electrified powertrains.

Consider alternatives if: You require maximum rear headroom or boot space, prefer conventional estate or SUV practicality, or are uncomfortable with unconventional driving positions and limited rear visibility.

Competitive Position: The Peugeot 408 occupies a unique position in the market, offering striking styling and a high-quality interior that set it apart from conventional rivals. Whilst the Nissan Qashqai and BMW 3 Series score higher on expert and user ratings, the 408's distinctive design and comfortable driving experience make it an appealing choice for those valuing allure and individuality. The Citroën C5 X offers similar comfort and practicality but with more conventional styling. The 408's electrified powertrain options and modern technology justify its position as a compelling alternative for buyers seeking something refreshingly different.
