Peugeot Boxer (2006-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Impressive load space and payload	Rivals are more refined and better to drive
Economical 2.2-litre diesel	Some gearbox issues with older used models
Well equipped	Electric version won't go far on a charge

Quick Summary

The Peugeot Boxer is a large van available in multiple configurations, including panel van, crew van, and window van variants. Introduced in 2006 as a collaboration with Fiat and Citroën, it offers impressive load space and payload capacity, with three wheelbase options and rear doors opening up to 270 degrees for improved access. The cabin is well-designed with two gloveboxes, numerous cubby holes, and comfortable seating for three up front with excellent headroom and legroom. Recent updates include cleaner 2.0-litre BlueHDi diesel engines introduced in 2016 and an all-new 2.2-litre unit in 2019 to meet Euro 6 emissions regulations.

Whilst the Boxer's underlying age is apparent in its driving dynamics, it remains a competitively economical option with claimed average fuel economy of up to 36mpg. The 2.2-litre BlueHDi engines produce either 118bhp or 138bhp, paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. All versions are manoeuvrable with light steering and good forward visibility, making them practical for tighter areas. A recently launched electric version offers smooth, punchy performance but limited range, making it better suited to local trips and last-mile deliveries rather than long-haul transport. Peugeot offers flexible service plans with fixed pricing to help keep running costs predictable and controllable.

Best for: Businesses and operators needing impressive load space, payload capacity, and economical running costs; those seeking a well-equipped, adaptable van with multiple configuration options.

Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising refined driving dynamics, comfort on long journeys, or the latest technology; those requiring long-range electric capability.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Boxer if: You need impressive load space and payload capacity, seek economical running costs, or require a well-equipped, adaptable van with multiple configuration options.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise refined driving dynamics, comfort on long journeys, the latest technology, or long-range electric capability.

Competitive Position: The Peugeot Boxer remains a competitively priced large van offering impressive practicality and economical running costs. Whilst rivals such as the Ford Transit and Volkswagen Crafter are more modern, refined, and better to drive, the Boxer's extensive load space, payload capacity, and well-designed cabin make it a sensible choice for businesses and operators seeking value. Recent engine updates and flexible service plans help keep it competitive, though its underlying age is apparent in driving dynamics. For those prioritising capability and economy over refinement, the Boxer represents solid value in the large van segment.
