Peugeot Boxer (2006-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Impressive load space and payload | Rivals are more refined and better to drive |
| Economical 2.2-litre diesel | Some gearbox issues with older used models |
| Well equipped | Electric version won't go far on a charge |
Quick Summary
The Peugeot Boxer is a large van introduced in 2006, offering a significant improvement over its predecessor with enhanced practicality, on-road manners, and economical HDi diesel engines. Developed collaboratively with Fiat and Citroën, it shares the same platform as the Fiat Ducato and Citroën Relay. Available in multiple configurations including panel van, crew van, and window van, with three wheelbase options, the Boxer provides impressive load space and payload capacity. Rear doors open 180 degrees, with a 270-degree option available, and the wide space between wheel arches accommodates larger loads. The cabin features two gloveboxes, numerous cubby holes, and ample cupholders, with seating for three up front with generous leg, shoulder, and headroom.
Current models are powered by one of two 2.2-litre BlueHDi diesel engines: the base BlueHDi 120 S&S producing 118bhp and 310lb ft of torque, or the BlueHDi 140 S&S with 138bhp and 340lb ft, both paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. Fuel economy averages 25.5-36.0mpg depending on configuration, with a 90-litre tank providing approximately 495 miles per tank. Whilst the Boxer's underlying age is apparent in its driving experience compared to newer competitors, it remains manoeuvrable with light steering and good forward visibility. A recently launched electric version offers smoother, quieter operation and punchy acceleration, though its limited range suits local trips and last-mile deliveries rather than long-haul transport. Peugeot offers fixed-price service plans up to five years, with standard servicing required every two years or 32,000 miles.
Best for: Businesses and operators requiring impressive load space and payload capacity, those seeking economical diesel running costs, and buyers wanting a well-equipped, configurable large van.
Not ideal for: Operators prioritising refined, comfortable driving experiences, those needing long-haul electric capability, or buyers concerned about potential gearbox issues on older used models.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Peugeot Boxer | 3/5 | 3.7/5 | 29.7% | 4.0/5 |
| Ford Transit | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 30.7% | 4.4/5 |
| Nissan NV400 | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 33.0% | 4.2/5 |
| Vauxhall Movano | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 55.9% | 4.2/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Boxer if: You require impressive load space and payload capacity, seek economical diesel running costs, or want a well-equipped and configurable large van for your business.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise refined and comfortable driving experiences, need long-haul electric capability, or are concerned about potential gearbox issues on older used models.
Competitive Position: The Peugeot Boxer remains a competitively economical option in the large van market, with many versions offering claimed average fuel economy of up to 36mpg. Whilst rivals such as the Ford Transit, Nissan NV400, and Vauxhall Movano are more modern, refined, and better to drive, the Boxer's updates and revisions—particularly the 2.2-litre BlueHDi engines meeting modern emissions regulations—keep it in contention. Despite its age, it still offers substantial load space, payload capacity, equipment, adaptability, and configurability, making it a sensible purchase if you're satisfied with its driving characteristics and performance.

3.7 Overall rating
(3 reviews)Test drove this van , started up alright and then drove it up the road, however when warmed up started blowing plumes of white smoke out, this indicates that a head gasket fault is present on this van
Great drive and spacious!, compared to fiat Ducatto
Simple, uncomplicated vehicle with excellent economy. Build quality is ok, but there are better. It has most things I would want, as do it’s’non-biological triplets’, the Relay and Ducato and the Relay.
