Polestar 2 (2020-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Stunning build quality	The Performance Pack is pricey
Very rapid acceleration	A Jaguar I-Pace is roomier
Good battery range	No traditional dealer network

Quick Summary

The Polestar 2 (2020-present) is a five-door electric hatchback that combines striking Nordic design with impressive performance and practicality. As Polestar's first true production EV, it directly challenges the Tesla Model 3 and other premium electric vehicles in the £45,000 to £55,000 bracket. The 2023 facelift brought significant improvements, including increased power across the range, rear-wheel drive for single-motor models, and a larger 82kWh battery offering up to 406 miles of WLTP range. Available in single-motor (268bhp) and dual-motor (400-469bhp) configurations, the Polestar 2 delivers smooth, near-silent acceleration with the flagship managing 0-62mph in just 4.2 seconds.

Beyond raw performance, the Polestar 2 excels in everyday usability. The cabin features exceptional build quality with woven fabrics and a minimalist button-free dashboard, whilst the five-door hatchback body provides a practical 405-litre boot (1,095 litres with rear seats folded) and comfortable seating for five. The innovative Android Automotive operating system with Google Maps and Google Assistant voice control offers one of the most intuitive infotainment systems available. Running costs are significantly lower than petrol or diesel equivalents, with home charging costing around £31.60 for a full charge. The car's supple ride, crisp steering, and composed handling make it both practical and engaging, though it lacks the charging infrastructure advantage of Tesla.

Best for: Buyers seeking a premium electric hatchback with exceptional design and build quality, those prioritising performance and range, and drivers who appreciate Scandinavian design philosophy over brand prestige.

Not ideal for: Those dependent on extensive dealer networks, buyers requiring maximum interior space (the Jaguar I-Pace offers more room), or drivers unwilling to invest in home charging infrastructure.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Polestar 2 if: You value premium build quality and Scandinavian design, seek a practical electric hatchback with impressive performance, or prefer a more sophisticated alternative to the Tesla Model 3.

Consider alternatives if: You require maximum interior space (Jaguar I-Pace), depend on extensive dealer networks, or prioritise the established charging infrastructure of Tesla.

Competitive Position: The Polestar 2 stands as a compelling alternative in the premium electric vehicle market. Whilst the Tesla Model 3 leads in user ratings and charging infrastructure, the Polestar 2 surpasses it in design sophistication and cabin quality. Compared to the Mercedes-Benz EQC and Jaguar I-Pace, the Polestar 2 offers superior performance and a more cohesive design philosophy. Its hatchback practicality, rapid acceleration, and exceptional build quality make it an excellent choice for discerning buyers seeking an electric vehicle that combines performance with everyday usability. The absence of a traditional dealer network is offset by competitive pricing and the convenience of online purchasing.
