Polestar 2 (2020-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Stunning build quality	The Performance Pack is pricey
Very rapid acceleration	A Jaguar I-Pace is roomier
Good battery range	No traditional dealer network

Quick Summary

The Polestar 2 (2020-present) is a five-door electric hatchback that combines striking Nordic design with impressive performance and practicality. As Polestar's first true production model following its independence from Volvo, it directly challenges the Tesla Model 3 in the premium EV segment. The 2023 facelift brought significant improvements, including increased power across the range, rear-wheel drive for single-motor models, and an expanded battery (82kWh) offering up to 406 miles of WLTP range. Available in single-motor (268bhp) and dual-motor (400-469bhp) configurations, the Polestar 2 delivers smooth, near-silent acceleration with the flagship managing 0-62mph in just 4.2 seconds.

Beyond raw performance, the Polestar 2 excels in build quality, cabin refinement, and technology. The minimalist interior features premium woven fabrics and exceptional fit and finish, whilst the innovative Android Automotive operating system with Google Maps and Assistant integration provides an intuitive infotainment experience. Practicality is well-considered, with a 405-litre boot (expandable to 1,095 litres with rear seats folded), supportive Volvo seats, and comprehensive storage. Charging at home costs around £31.60 for a full charge, whilst rapid chargers can deliver 80% in under 30 minutes. The car's five-star Euro NCAP rating and advanced driver aids underline its safety credentials.

Best for: Buyers seeking a premium electric hatchback with exceptional design and build quality, those prioritising performance and range, and drivers who appreciate Scandinavian design philosophy over mainstream EV brands.

Not ideal for: Those requiring maximum interior space (the Jaguar I-Pace offers more room), buyers seeking a traditional dealer network, or those on a tight budget looking for the cheapest EV option.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Polestar 2 if: You're seeking a premium electric hatchback with exceptional design and build quality, prioritising performance and range, or appreciating Scandinavian design philosophy over mainstream EV brands.

Consider alternatives if: You require maximum interior space, prefer a traditional dealer network, or are seeking the cheapest EV option available.

Competitive Position: The Polestar 2 stands as a compelling alternative to the Tesla Model 3 in the premium EV hatchback market. Whilst the Tesla edges ahead on expert and user ratings, the Polestar matches it for driving range and practicality, whilst surpassing it significantly in design sophistication and cabin quality. Against the Jaguar I-Pace and Mercedes-Benz EQC, the Polestar 2 offers superior design credentials and a more engaging driving experience, though the I-Pace provides more interior space. The Polestar's online-only sales model keeps costs competitive, and its combination of performance, build quality, and Scandinavian design makes it an excellent choice for discerning buyers who value integrity and aesthetics alongside electric performance.
