Porsche Taycan (2019-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Mind-blowing performance	Base model should really come with more kit as standard
Genuinely involving to drive	Not as practical as a Tesla Model S
Exceptionally rapid charging	Poor rear visibility

Quick Summary

The Porsche Taycan is a pure electric, four-door sports GT car that represents a whole new era of performance EVs. Offered in five variants—standard, 4S, GTS, Turbo and Turbo S—it combines mind-blowing performance with genuine driving involvement. The Turbo achieves 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds, whilst the Turbo S manages a kidney-bruising 2.8 seconds. However, the rear-wheel drive model with the Performance Plus battery is the pick of the range, offering 469bhp, a 5.4-second 0-62mph time, and over 300 miles of real-world range. The 2021 Cross Turismo variant adds practicality with a shooting brake design and an extra 47mm of rear headroom, plus a larger 446-litre boot.

The Taycan's interior is beautifully crafted with a curved digital display, dual touchscreen system and minimalist dashboard. Charging is exceptionally rapid—over 100 miles of range in less than a coffee break at 350kW DC chargers. Running costs are significantly lower than petrol equivalents, with a full charge costing under £13 for approximately 240 miles of real-world driving. The car is also free of Vehicle Excise Duty, saving around £4,500 compared to petrol rivals. Depreciation is expected to be strong, and the Taycan drives beautifully with precise cornering, playful handling and remarkable comfort thanks to adaptive air suspension.

Best for: Buyers seeking a thrilling, involving electric performance car with luxury credentials, strong running cost savings, and the prestige of the Porsche brand.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising maximum practicality (Tesla Model S offers more space), high-mileage drivers who might prefer a plug-in hybrid, or buyers seeking a comprehensive standard equipment list without expensive options.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Taycan if: You seek a thrilling, involving electric performance car with luxury credentials, strong running cost savings, and the prestige of the Porsche brand.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum practicality, undertake high mileage, or require a comprehensive standard equipment list without expensive options.

Competitive Position: The Porsche Taycan stands as the best luxury electric car on sale, combining mind-blowing performance with genuine driving involvement that sets it apart from rivals. Whilst the Tesla Model S offers better practicality and lower purchase prices with access to Tesla's charging network, the Taycan delivers superior driving dynamics and a more engaging experience. The plug-in hybrid Porsche Panamera may suit high-mileage drivers seeking electric running with petrol peace of mind, and the Bentley Continental GT offers traditional luxury appeal. However, for those with the means and lifestyle to justify it, the Taycan's exceptional performance, rapid charging, low running costs and Porsche heritage make it the definitive choice in its segment.
