Renault Austral (2026) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Roomy and versatile	Lots of road noise
Pleasant interior	Ride is rather firm
Refined hybrid powertrain	Four-wheel steering can feel twitchy

Quick Summary

The Renault Austral is a midsize family SUV that combines modern design, advanced technology and efficient hybrid powertrains. Powered exclusively by a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with two electric motors, the E-Tech full hybrid system produces 196bhp and delivers impressive efficiency of up to 60.1mpg with CO2 emissions of just 105g/km. The spacious 555-litre boot, adjustable rear seats and high driving position make it practical for families, whilst the Google-backed infotainment system with a 12.0-inch touchscreen is one of the best in its class.

The Austral offers three trim levels—Techno, Techno Esprit Alpine and Iconic Esprit Alpine—with comprehensive equipment across the range. However, ride comfort can feel unsettled on poor road surfaces, and the sharp steering response on four-wheel steering models may not suit all drivers. Despite these compromises, the Austral presents a compelling alternative to established rivals, offering a well-built, efficient and technologically advanced package with strong residual values and reasonable insurance costs.

Best for: Families seeking a spacious, modern SUV with excellent efficiency, advanced infotainment and a smooth hybrid powertrain, and those prioritising cutting-edge technology and design.

Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising ride comfort on rough roads, those preferring lighter steering responses, or buyers seeking the most established brand reputation in the segment.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Austral if: You're seeking a spacious, modern SUV with excellent efficiency, advanced infotainment and a smooth hybrid powertrain, and prioritise cutting-edge technology and design.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise ride comfort on rough roads, prefer lighter steering responses, or seek the most established brand reputation in the segment.

Competitive Position: The Renault Austral is a compelling midsize family SUV that stands out for its modern design, refined hybrid powertrain and class-leading infotainment system. Whilst it scores lower than key rivals like the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson on overall ratings, the Austral offers a distinctive alternative with strong efficiency credentials and cutting-edge technology. Its main drawbacks—firm ride quality and potentially twitchy steering on four-wheel steering models—are outweighed by its spaciousness, pleasant interior and impressive fuel economy, making it an excellent choice for tech-savvy families prioritising efficiency and modern features over traditional brand prestige.
