Renault Captur Mk1 (2013-2019) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Attractive styling	Not very engaging to drive
Practical for such a small car	Some question marks over reliability
Smooth ride	Could be better finished inside

Quick Summary

The Renault Captur Mk1 (2013-2019) is a stylish and practical small SUV that combines the practicality of a hatchback with the elevated driving position of an SUV. Based on the Clio platform, it offers impressive interior flexibility with rear seats that slide to prioritise either passenger legroom or boot space, providing between 377 and 455 litres of boot capacity. The Captur was Europe's best-selling small SUV in 2016, and its attractive design, comfortable ride, and spacious interior make it an appealing choice for families seeking a versatile vehicle without the bulk of a larger SUV.

Engine options range from a 0.9-litre petrol TCe 90 to a 1.2-litre TCe 120, with diesel alternatives including the 1.5-litre dCi 90 and dCi 110, which offer superior fuel economy and lower running costs. The suspension prioritises comfort over sharp handling, resulting in a serene driving experience, though this means it's less engaging than some rivals. Trim levels evolved throughout the generation, from early Expression variants to later Play, Iconic, and GT Line models. Servicing costs are reasonable, though cambelt replacement every six years or 90,000 miles should be factored in. Whilst reliability concerns exist, a well-maintained example offers excellent practicality and value.

Best for: Families seeking a practical, comfortable, and stylish small SUV with good fuel economy, particularly those prioritising interior space and a smooth ride over driving engagement.

Not ideal for: Drivers wanting sharp handling and engaging dynamics, or those concerned about potential reliability issues without comprehensive service history.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Captur if: You're seeking a practical, comfortable, and stylish small SUV with good fuel economy and interior flexibility, particularly for family use or those prioritising a smooth ride.

Consider alternatives if: You want sharp handling and engaging driving dynamics, or require a vehicle with a proven reliability record without concerns about service history.

Competitive Position: The Renault Captur Mk1 is a strong contender in the small SUV segment, offering superior practicality and comfort compared to rivals like the Nissan Juke and Vauxhall Mokka. Whilst it doesn't match the Peugeot 2008 for value deals, the Captur's attractive styling, flexible interior, and smooth ride make it an excellent all-round choice. Its main weakness is driving engagement and some reliability concerns, but a well-maintained example represents outstanding value for families seeking a practical and comfortable small SUV.
