Renault Megane (2016-2022) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Impressively comfortable ride | Doesn't excel in any one area |
| Punchy, efficient engines | Questionable reliability record |
| Effective plug-in version | Infotainment awkward to use. |
Quick Summary
The Renault Megane (2016-2022) is a stylish, if unassuming, French family hatchback that offers a comfortable ride and robust interior. While it might not be as common as rivals like the Ford Focus or VW Golf, its design, featuring distinctive LED running lights and full-width tail lights, is pleasing. The interior, though featuring some grey plastic, feels durable and is ergonomically designed. Rear seats are reasonably spacious, offering more room than a Peugeot 308, and boot space is generous, with an estate version available for greater practicality.
The Megane delivers a relaxed driving experience, feeling stable and secure on flowing roads, and its soft suspension provides a comfortable ride, making it a good motorway cruiser. While not inherently sporty, high-performance Renaultsport (RS) versions offer a thrilling hot hatch experience. Trim levels evolved, with newer models offering Iconic and RS Line variants, both featuring crisp touchscreens (7-inch or 9.3-inch) with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, though the interface can be fiddly. Running costs are competitive, with petrol engines achieving 40-45mpg and diesels around 55mpg. Petrol versions benefit from a timing chain, reducing long-term maintenance, and the E-Tech plug-in hybrid is an attractive option for company car users due to low CO2 emissions.
Best for: Buyers seeking a comfortable ride, stylish design, competitive running costs (petrol/diesel), company car users (PHEV), or an exciting hot hatch (RS).
Not ideal for: Those prioritising class-leading interior space (like Skoda Octavia/Ford Focus), ultimate driving dynamics (Ford Focus), or concerned about potential depreciation/Renault's reliability record. Also, those who prefer intuitive infotainment with physical controls.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Renault Megane | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 30.5% | 4.2/5 |
| Ford Focus | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 32.6% | 4.4/5 |

| Vauxhall Astra | 3/5 | 4.1/5 | 29.3% | 4.2/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Megane if: You're looking for a family car with a comfortable ride, punchy engines, a generous equipment list, and reasonable prices, especially if considering the plug-in hybrid for company car benefits.
Consider alternatives if: You want better driving dynamics (Ford Focus), more interior space (Skoda Octavia), a more modern all-rounder (Seat Leon), or are concerned about heavy depreciation and potential reliability issues.
Competitive Position: The Renault Megane (2016-2022) is a pleasant and well-equipped family hatchback that offers a comfortable ride and stylish design. While it may not outperform rivals like the Ford Focus in driving dynamics or the Skoda Octavia in space, its competitive running costs (for petrol/diesel), generous standard features, and the appeal of its E-Tech plug-in hybrid for company car users make it a worthy contender. However, potential buyers should be aware of its predicted depreciation and Renault's reliability record compared to some segment leaders. The RS versions offer a compelling, fun-to-drive hot hatch alternative.

(24 reviews)Good car with £0 tax, cheap Insurance, a real work horse , minimal faults, great runner and great fuel economy
Great value for money. Comfortable and economical plus very reliable.
It is simply awesome, smooth and comfortable to drive
It’s a lot of car for not a lot of money. I grabbed a great bargain with this car. Apple play , in addition to all the toys and extras including pearlescent paint for a fraction of the BMW 3 series touring I was considering. Not my 1st Renault but I’m glad I chose this one
Spacious and easy to drive. High comfort level And excellent fuel economy. Build quality could be bette.
