Renault Megane (2016-2022) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Impressively comfortable ride | Doesn't excel in any one area |
| Punchy, efficient engines | Questionable reliability record |
| Effective plug-in version | Infotainment awkward to use |
Quick Summary
The Renault Megane (2016-2022) is a stylish French family hatchback that offers a comfortable ride and punchy, efficient engines. With its big LED running lights and near-full-width tail light clusters, it presents an unassuming but appealing exterior. Inside, whilst there's considerable grey plastic, the design is easy on the eye and feels robust. The rear seats provide adequate space for families, though not quite matching the best in class, and boot space is fairly generous. An estate version is available for those requiring greater practicality.
The Megane drives in a relaxed manner, feeling stable and secure on flowing roads, though it lacks sportiness on more challenging terrain due to soft suspension and unevenly weighted steering. However, this soft suspension delivers a comfortable ride and makes it an excellent motorway cruiser. The Renaultsport (RS) variant remains a terrific hot hatch, available in standard, Trophy, and extreme Trophy-R forms. With punchy petrol engines delivering 40-45mpg and efficient diesels achieving around 55mpg, the Megane offers reasonable running costs, though depreciation is a concern. The plug-in hybrid E-Tech makes sense as a company car due to low CO2 emissions.
Best for: Families seeking a comfortable, well-equipped car with a relaxed driving experience, and company car buyers considering the plug-in hybrid variant.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising driving dynamics, maximum interior space, or seeking the best long-term value, or buyers concerned about reliability records.

The Verdict
You should buy the Megane if: You're seeking a comfortable, well-equipped family car with a relaxed driving experience, or considering a plug-in hybrid as a company car.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise driving dynamics, maximum interior space, or require the best long-term value and reliability.
Competitive Position: The Renault Megane (2016-2022) is a pleasant and competent family hatchback, but it doesn't excel in any particular area. Whilst it offers a comfortable ride, punchy engines, and good equipment, the Ford Focus delivers superior driving dynamics, the Volkswagen Golf provides a more premium feel, and the Seat Leon offers better value and modern appeal. The Megane's predicted heavy depreciation and questionable reliability record further diminish its appeal compared to rivals. However, for those prioritising comfort and equipment over driving engagement, and especially company car buyers considering the plug-in hybrid, it remains a sensible choice.

Great value for money. Comfortable and economical plus very reliable.
It is simply awesome, smooth and comfortable to drive
It’s a lot of car for not a lot of money. I grabbed a great bargain with this car. Apple play , in addition to all the toys and extras including pearlescent paint for a fraction of the BMW 3 series touring I was considering. Not my 1st Renault but I’m glad I chose this one
Spacious and easy to drive. High comfort level And excellent fuel economy. Build quality could be bette.
