Renault Megane (2016-2022) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Impressively comfortable ride | Doesn't excel in any one area |
| Punchy, efficient engines | Questionable reliability record |
| Effective plug-in version | Infotainment awkward to use |
Quick Summary
The Renault Megane (2016-2022) is a stylish French family hatchback that offers a comfortable ride and punchy, efficient engines. With its big LED running lights and near-full-width tail light clusters, it presents an appealing exterior, whilst the interior features robust materials and straightforward design. The rear seats provide adequate space for passengers, though not quite matching the best in class, and boot space is fairly generous. An estate version is available for those requiring additional practicality.
The Megane drives in a relaxed manner, delivering stability and comfort on motorway journeys with its soft suspension and quiet cabin. The plug-in hybrid E-Tech variant offers low CO2 emissions, making it particularly attractive as a company car. Petrol versions achieve around 40-45mpg, whilst diesel options deliver approximately 55mpg. The Renaultsport (RS) performance variants, available in standard, Trophy, and extreme Trophy-R forms, provide engaging driving dynamics. However, the Megane doesn't excel in any particular area, and its predicted depreciation and reliability concerns are notable drawbacks compared to rivals.
Best for: Buyers seeking a comfortable, well-equipped family hatchback, particularly those considering it as a company car (especially the plug-in hybrid), and those who appreciate French styling and relaxed driving characteristics.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising outstanding driving dynamics, maximum interior space, or those concerned about long-term reliability and resale value.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Renault Megane | 3/5 | 4.7/5 | 35.5% | 4.2/5 |
| Ford Focus | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 33.2% | 4.4/5 |
| Volkswagen Golf | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 32.3% | 4.4/5 |
| Vauxhall Astra | 3/5 | 4.0/5 | 31.6% | 4.2/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Megane if: You're seeking a comfortable, well-equipped family hatchback, particularly as a company car (especially the plug-in hybrid), or you appreciate French styling and relaxed driving characteristics.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise outstanding driving dynamics, maximum interior space, or are concerned about long-term reliability and resale value.
Competitive Position: The Renault Megane (2016-2022) is a pleasant and competent family hatchback that offers comfort, efficiency, and generous equipment. However, it struggles to excel in any particular area compared to its rivals. The Ford Focus delivers superior driving dynamics, the Volkswagen Golf offers a more premium feel and better reliability, and the Seat Leon provides a more modern all-rounder experience. The Megane's predicted depreciation and questionable reliability record further weaken its case, though its lower purchase price and effective plug-in hybrid option provide some appeal, particularly for company car buyers.

4.7 Overall rating
(9 reviews)I had a 2016 MK 4 Renault Megane 1.6 diesel Dynamique Nav. I absolutely loved this car. Unfortunately, it got written off, but I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good, reliable, economic car.
Good car with £0 tax, cheap Insurance, a real work horse , minimal faults, great runner and great fuel economy
Great value for money. Comfortable and economical plus very reliable.
It is simply awesome, smooth and comfortable to drive
It’s a lot of car for not a lot of money. I grabbed a great bargain with this car. Apple play , in addition to all the toys and extras including pearlescent paint for a fraction of the BMW 3 series touring I was considering. Not my 1st Renault but I’m glad I chose this one
