Renault Twingo (2014-2019) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Brilliantly manoeuvrable around town	Uncomfortable ride
Cheeky styling	Not much fun to drive
Good cabin space	Tiny boot

Quick Summary

The Renault Twingo (2014-2019) is a quirky urban runabout with an unconventional rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive layout. This design delivers exceptional manoeuvrability and tight turning circles, making it ideal for navigating congested city streets and tight parking spaces. The cabin offers surprising spaciousness for four occupants, though the rear-mounted engine significantly compromises boot space. Styling is distinctive and fun, with a comprehensive range spanning five standard trim levels plus the more potent GT variant.

However, the execution falls short in several areas. The ride quality is bobbly and unsettled, particularly on motorways, and the steering feels lifeless. Engine options lack urgency, with the clunky five-speed manual gearbox and vague clutch making smooth driving difficult. Running costs are reasonable, with the 1.0 SCe 70 achieving 55-60mpg and the turbocharged 0.9 TCe 90 offering only marginally lower economy. All engines feature timing chains for longevity. Renault's reliability record remains a concern, making this car best suited to those captivated by its styling rather than those seeking driving engagement.

Best for: Urban drivers seeking exceptional manoeuvrability, budget-conscious buyers, and those prioritising quirky styling and city-car practicality.

Not ideal for: Buyers wanting a comfortable motorway experience, engaging driving dynamics, or generous boot space, or those concerned about manufacturer reliability.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Twingo if: You prioritise city driving and manoeuvrability, appreciate distinctive styling, seek budget-friendly urban transport, or value cabin space over boot capacity.

Consider alternatives if: You require comfortable motorway driving, engaging handling, generous boot space, or prioritise manufacturer reliability and proven track records.

Competitive Position: The Renault Twingo (2014-2019) holds its own in the urban city-car segment with exceptional manoeuvrability and user satisfaction. Whilst the Citroën C1 matches its user rating and offers comparable value, and the Peugeot 3008 provides superior expert ratings and overall appeal, the Twingo's unique rear-engined design and quirky character make it distinctive. However, its uncomfortable ride, lifeless steering, and Renault's reliability concerns mean it appeals primarily to style-conscious urban drivers rather than those seeking all-round competence. For buyers wanting more conventional driving dynamics and proven reliability, rivals like the Citroën C1 or Peugeot 3008 may prove more satisfying.
