Seat Alhambra (2010-2020) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Fantastically practical	Some potential reliability issues
Sliding doors a real boon	Ford S-Max is better to drive
Surprisingly enjoyable to drive	Luggage space tight with all seven seats in place

Quick Summary

The Seat Alhambra (2010-2020) is a seven-seat MPV that represents one of the most practical vehicles available on the used market. This second-generation model marked a significant improvement over its predecessor, offering increased cabin space, improved shoulder room, and legroom for all passengers. With electrically opening sliding doors, integrated child seats, and flexible seating that folds away when not needed, the Alhambra is exceptionally family-friendly. Boot space reaches a van-like 2,430 litres with both rear rows folded away, making it ideal for families requiring maximum versatility.

From behind the wheel, the Alhambra delivers a surprisingly engaging drive for an MPV, with decent body control, plenty of grip, and assured steering. It offers a choice of 1.4 TSI petrol and 2.0 TDI diesel engines, with the latter providing superior fuel economy and performance when fully loaded. The 2015 facelift introduced more efficient engines consuming up to 15% less fuel, improved infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and enhanced safety systems. Diesel models achieve 40-45mpg in real-world driving, whilst insurance groups remain relatively affordable. Running costs are reasonable, with fixed-price servicing available and numerous Volkswagen Group specialists offering competitive rates.

Best for: Families requiring maximum practicality and space, those needing flexible seating arrangements, and drivers seeking an MPV that's genuinely enjoyable to drive.

Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising the sharpest handling (Ford S-Max excels here), those concerned about potential reliability issues, or those needing maximum boot space with all seven seats occupied.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Alhambra if: You're a family requiring maximum practicality and flexible seating, need an MPV that's genuinely enjoyable to drive, or want excellent value in the seven-seat market.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the sharpest handling (Ford S-Max), are concerned about potential reliability issues, or require maximum boot space with all seats occupied.

Competitive Position: The Seat Alhambra (2010-2020) stands out as one of the finest practical MPVs available used. Whilst the Ford S-Max offers superior driving dynamics and the Volkswagen Sharan provides a closely related alternative, the Alhambra's combination of exceptional practicality, sliding doors, flexible seating, and surprisingly engaging handling makes it a compelling choice. With reasonable running costs, decent fuel economy from diesel engines, and strong user satisfaction, it represents excellent value for families seeking a versatile, well-engineered seven-seater. Potential reliability concerns warrant choosing examples with full service histories and evidence of careful maintenance.
