Seat Alhambra (2010-2020) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Fantastically practical	Some potential reliability issues
Sliding doors a real boon	Ford S-Max is better to drive
Surprisingly enjoyable to drive	Luggage space tight with all seven seats in place

Quick Summary

The Seat Alhambra (2010-2020) is a seven-seat MPV that represents one of the most practical family vehicles available on the used market. This second-generation model marked a significant improvement over its predecessor, offering increased cabin space, improved shoulder room, and legroom for all passengers. With electrically opening sliding doors, integrated child seats, and seats that fold away when not needed, the Alhambra prioritises family convenience. Boot space reaches a van-like 2,430 litres with both rear rows folded, making it exceptionally versatile for families requiring maximum flexibility.

The Alhambra delivers a surprisingly engaging driving experience for an MPV, with decent body control, plenty of grip, and assured steering that makes it one of the best large MPVs to drive. Engine options include a 1.4-litre TSI petrol and various 2.0-litre TDI diesels, with the latter offering superior fuel economy and performance. A 2015 facelift brought improved engines consuming up to 15% less fuel, updated driver assistance systems, and modern infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Diesel models achieve 40-45mpg in real-world driving, whilst insurance groups remain reasonable. However, potential reliability concerns warrant choosing cars with full service histories and evidence of proper maintenance.

Best for: Large families seeking maximum practicality, those prioritising versatile seating and storage solutions, and drivers wanting an MPV that's genuinely enjoyable to drive.

Not ideal for: Buyers concerned about reliability without comprehensive service records, those seeking the sharpest driving dynamics (Ford S-Max offers more), or those with limited boot space requirements when all seven seats are occupied.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Alhambra if: You're a large family seeking maximum practicality, prioritising versatile seating and storage, and wanting an MPV that's genuinely enjoyable to drive.

Consider alternatives if: You're concerned about reliability without comprehensive service records, seeking the sharpest driving dynamics, or require maximum boot space with all seven seats occupied.

Competitive Position: The Seat Alhambra (2010-2020) stands out as an exceptionally practical seven-seat MPV with surprising driving enjoyment. Whilst the Volkswagen Sharan is its close technical relative, the Alhambra edges ahead with superior practicality and a more engaging driving experience. The Ford S-Max offers sharper handling but seats only five, whilst the Citroën Grand C4 Picasso provides competitive value. The Alhambra's sliding doors, flexible seating, and van-like cargo capacity make it the most versatile choice for families, though potential reliability concerns mean prioritising well-maintained examples with full service histories is essential.
