Seat Ibiza (2002-2008) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Sporty driving experience	Interior build quality not sparkling
Sharp styling	Petrol FR and Cupra models expensive to run
Impressively fuel-efficient diesels	All Ibizas are quite firm-riding

Quick Summary

The Seat Ibiza (2002-2008), known as the third-generation model, represents a significant step forward in the supermini market. With sharp styling that has aged well, a sporty driving experience, and excellent value as a used car, the Ibiza offers genuine appeal. The interior is reasonably roomy for its size, with a 267-litre boot providing adequate storage. A broad choice of engines is available, from economical 1.2-litre petrols to high-performance turbocharged variants, ensuring there's an Ibiza to suit most budgets and requirements.

The standout feature is the range of impressively fuel-efficient diesel engines, particularly the 1.9 TDI Ecomotive, which can achieve mid-60s mpg in real-world driving. The FR and Cupra hot hatches offer thrilling performance for keen drivers, though petrol versions are expensive to run. The firm ride may not suit everyone, and earlier cars feature cheaper interior finishes, but the overall package represents excellent value. Running costs are generally low, with the 1.2 petrol sitting in insurance groups 5-7, making it an affordable proposition for budget-conscious buyers.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a sporty, stylish supermini, drivers prioritising fuel economy (diesel models), and those wanting an affordable hot hatch (FR and Cupra variants).

Not ideal for: Buyers seeking premium interior quality, those preferring a softer ride, or drivers wanting the lowest insurance costs on performance models.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Ibiza if: You're seeking a sporty, stylish supermini on a budget, prioritising fuel economy with diesel engines, or looking for an affordable hot hatch (FR and Cupra).

Consider alternatives if: You require premium interior quality, prefer a softer ride, or want the lowest insurance costs on performance variants.

Competitive Position: The Seat Ibiza (2002-2008) is a strong contender in the used supermini market, offering excellent value and a sporty driving experience. Whilst the Volkswagen Polo commands premium badge appeal, the Ibiza matches it for user satisfaction and exceeds it for expert rating. The sharp styling has aged remarkably well, and the impressive range of efficient diesel engines sets it apart from rivals. The firm ride and interior build quality are minor compromises, but the overall package—combining affordability, practicality, and driving enjoyment—makes the Ibiza an excellent choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking character and performance.
