Smart ForFour (2014-2022) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Manoeuvrability makes it very capable in the city	Not all that much fun to drive
Unusual styling stands out	Rather expensive compared with rivals
Generally feels like a premium product	Small boot

Quick Summary

The Smart ForFour (2014-2022) is a four-seat urban runabout developed in partnership with the Renault Twingo. This second-generation model offers a more refined driving experience than its predecessor, with improved sound deadening and a slicker interior. Designed primarily for city driving, it excels with an ultra-tight 8.65-metre turning circle and excellent manoeuvrability, making parking effortless. The rear doors open to 85 degrees, simplifying access to the cramped rear quarters and child seat installation. With rear seats folded, boot space expands to an impressive 975 litres, though with seats up, it manages only 185 litres.

Available with a non-turbo 1.0-litre petrol engine (70bhp) or a turbocharged 0.9-litre three-cylinder (89bhp), the ForFour offers either a five-speed manual or six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Fuel economy reaches approximately 54.3mpg with the turbocharged automatic, whilst CO2 emissions of 113-123g/km keep tax costs low. The interior feels vibrant and premium, with clever design touches throughout. However, the ForFour is expensive compared with rivals, and whilst comfortable around town, it's less refined on longer motorway journeys where smaller engines require hard work to maintain pace.

Best for: Urban drivers seeking excellent manoeuvrability and parking ease, those valuing stylish design and premium interior feel, and buyers wanting a practical city car with low running costs.

Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising value for money, those requiring a spacious boot with seats up, or buyers seeking engaging driving dynamics and motorway comfort.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the ForFour if: You're an urban driver seeking excellent manoeuvrability and parking ease, value stylish design and premium interior feel, or want a practical city car with low running costs.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise value for money, require a spacious boot with seats up, or seek engaging driving dynamics and motorway comfort.

Competitive Position: The Smart ForFour (2014-2022) is a capable urban runabout with distinctive styling and a premium feel, but it struggles to justify its higher price against more affordable rivals. Whilst it excels in city environments with its exceptional manoeuvrability and clever interior design, it lacks the driving engagement of competitors and offers limited boot space with seats in place. The mechanically similar Renault Twingo offers better value, whilst the Volkswagen Up provides superior overall refinement and practicality. For budget-conscious buyers, the Fiat 500 delivers comparable style at a lower cost. However, for those prioritising urban agility and premium presentation over value, the ForFour remains an excellent choice on the used market where depreciation has made it more accessible.
