Smart ForFour (2014-2022) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Manoeuvrability makes it very capable in the city | Not all that much fun to drive |
| Unusual styling stands out | Rather expensive compared with rivals |
| Generally feels like a premium product | Small boot |
Quick Summary
The second-generation Smart ForFour (2014-2022) is a four-seat city car that prioritises urban agility and style. Developed alongside the Renault Twingo, it offers a more refined interior and a premium feel. Its standout feature is its manoeuvrability, with an exceptionally tight turning circle that makes parking effortless. Practicality is cleverly addressed despite its small size, with rear doors that open to 85 degrees for easy access and folding seats that expand the tiny 185-litre boot to a more useful 975 litres.
Powered by small 1.0-litre or 0.9-litre turbocharged petrol engines, the ForFour is nippy around town but can feel strained and noisy on motorways. The cabin is a highlight, with a funky design and high-quality materials that make it feel special compared to rivals. Running costs are low thanks to frugal fuel economy of around 52-54mpg, cheap road tax, and low insurance groupings, making it a viable option for new drivers. However, it has always been a relatively expensive choice in a competitive class.
Best for: City dwellers who need maximum manoeuvrability, buyers who value distinctive styling and a premium-feeling interior over outright space.
Not ideal for: Those who regularly travel on motorways, need a large boot for family duties, or are seeking the best value for money in the city car class.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Smart ForFour | 2/5 | 4.5/5 | 30.1% | 3.9/5 |
| Fiat 500 | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 34.8% | 4.2/5 |
| Renault Twingo | 3/5 | 4.5/5 | 27.1% | 3.9/5 |
| Volkswagen Up | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 32.8% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the ForFour if: You want a chic city car with a premium-feeling cabin and unparalleled manoeuvrability for tight urban streets.
Consider alternatives if: Your priorities are boot space, long-distance comfort, or getting the most for your money, as rivals offer more practicality for less.
Competitive Position: The Smart ForFour occupies a stylish niche in the city car market. It excels as an urban companion, where its tiny turning circle and compact dimensions make it a joy to drive and park. While it feels more upmarket inside than many rivals, this comes at a price. It's less practical and more expensive than the mechanically similar Renault Twingo and other competitors like the Volkswagen Up, making it a purchase led by the heart and a love for its unique design.

4.5 Overall rating
(6 reviews)Great little car. Lovely to drive, can turn on a sixpence! Still discovering all the gadgets and gizmos. Very good value and economical.
Great value, fab little run around. The boot is quite large and the four seats are a definite plus. The engine is in the boot and the front bonnet just pops off to reveal the water fill up. The dash is easy to understand and for a l.0 its pretty nippy. The passion is orange inside and the way it has been done it looks great. A wonderful little car which has zero car tax
a decent small car for around the town. Front seats have plenty of room for the average sized driver. The back less so wouldnt want to travel too far seated there. Driving in Eco mode with air con etc. off gives me a range of around 90ish miles. The 2020 model will accept 22kw charging but mine was only supplied with a 32A 7Kw l+ 13A domestic mains lead. So for fast charging you need to splash out on a new fast charging [3phase] lead. The boot is small especially when the two charging cable are bagged in it. However it improves a bit when the seats are folded down .
For such a small vehicle it handles and responds like a larger engined vehicle.
Is the best small car I ever own)drive! Beautyfull, fast, a real dragon!
