The Subaru Outback is a rufty-tufty estate car that’s raised up and beefed up to look more like an SUV, but it’s actually more capable off-road than most of the SUVs it competes with thanks to lofty ground clearance and permanent four-wheel drive. It impresses with its practicality and quality, but the package is rather undermined by an engine that’s both gutless and thirsty: not a great combination.
