Subaru Outback (2020-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Aggressive prices and generous standard equipment	Very thirsty on fuel
Masses of safety kit provided	High CO2 emissions make it an expensive company car
Impressive practicality and quality	Only so-so to drive

Quick Summary

The Subaru Outback (2020-present) is a practical and well-equipped estate-SUV hybrid that offers impressive interior space and a cavernous 561-litre boot. Built with solid quality throughout, it comes generously equipped across all trim levels with safety features, climate control, heated seats, and an 11.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The sophisticated X-Mode four-wheel-drive system and jacked-up suspension provide genuine off-road capability, whilst hill descent control and a 2,000kg towing capacity add versatility for adventurous owners.

However, the Outback is undermined by its underpowered 2.5-litre boxer engine, which produces only 167bhp and achieves a disappointing 32.8mpg. High CO2 emissions of 193g/km make it costly as a company car, and the CVT gearbox, whilst smooth, can sound strained under acceleration. The ride is slightly pattery at low speeds and body roll is noticeable in corners, making it merely adequate rather than engaging to drive. Despite these shortcomings, competitive pricing and comprehensive standard equipment provide good value for those prioritising practicality and capability over driving dynamics.

Best for: Families seeking a spacious, well-equipped vehicle with genuine off-road capability, those who value practicality and safety kit, and buyers willing to accept modest driving dynamics for versatility.

Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising fuel efficiency or low running costs, company car users concerned about tax implications, or those seeking engaging on-road handling and performance.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Outback if: You prioritise practicality and safety kit, seek genuine off-road capability, or value competitive pricing and generous standard equipment over driving engagement.

Consider alternatives if: You require excellent fuel efficiency, low running costs, premium driving dynamics, or are concerned about company car tax implications.

Competitive Position: The Subaru Outback occupies a unique niche as a practical estate-SUV hybrid with genuine off-road credentials. Whilst it underperforms rivals like the Kia Sportage and Volvo V90 Cross Country on driving dynamics and efficiency, its aggressive pricing, comprehensive standard equipment, and solid build quality make it compelling for families prioritising versatility and capability. The Outback represents sensible value for those willing to accept modest performance and fuel economy in exchange for space, safety, and all-terrain ability.
