Suzuki Alto (2009-2014) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Running costs don't get much lower | Limited space and versatility |
| Easy to drive and park | Cabin feels rather low-rent |
| Should be enormously reliable | Not flush with equipment |
Quick Summary
The Suzuki Alto (2009-2014) is a small, light, and frugal city car designed as an inexpensive and economical option for urban driving. Powered by a 1.0-litre petrol engine, it offers easy manoeuvrability and parking thanks to its light steering and tiny footprint. While basic in equipment, higher trims offered air conditioning and stability control. However, its small size means limited boot space (129 litres) and seating for only four, with a 3-star Euro NCAP rating.
Running costs are a major advantage for the Alto, with excellent fuel economy (around 50mpg real-world for manuals) and low maintenance. Its K10B engine uses a timing chain, reducing long-term costs, and parts like tyres and brakes are inexpensive. While it excels in city environments, its shortage of power, refinement, and comfort make it less suitable for longer trips or motorway journeys, where it can feel tiring and less stable. It represents a reliable and affordable choice for those needing a durable car for short, urban commutes.
Best for: Drivers on a tight budget, those needing a durable and economical car for short trips and around-town work.
Not ideal for: Buyers who frequently undertake longer trips or motorway journeys, those prioritising safety ratings above three stars, or seeking a car with more refinement and space.

The Verdict
You should buy the Alto if: You're on a tight budget, seeking a durable and economical car for short trips and around-town work.
Consider alternatives if: You frequently undertake longer trips or motorway journeys, prioritise safety ratings above three stars, or seek a car with more refinement and space.
Competitive Position: The Suzuki Alto (2009-2014) stands out in the city car segment for its exceptionally low running costs, ease of driving in urban environments, and high reliability. While it falls short on space, safety ratings, and refinement compared to some rivals like the Hyundai i10, its affordability, simple mechanics, and cheap parts make it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers primarily using the car for short, local journeys. It offers a straightforward, honest approach to basic motoring.

4.4 Overall rating
(8 reviews)Car runs really well for the 2 days Ive had it, clutch has a higher biting point than Im used to but Ill get used to that in time, never drove a Suzuki before. Nice and quiet engine and only £20 for road tax!
ideal for the wife small and cheap to run good car
The steering is far too heavy. Power steering was introduced on later models. Also the drivers seat is too low and at a poor angle. The seat cannot be raised.
No central locking or air con or alloy wheels unfortunately
Cheap ,eco ,free tax, city car, easy to parking, best first car
