Suzuki Alto (2009-2014) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Running costs don't get much lower | Limited space and versatility |
| Easy to drive and park | Cabin feels rather low-rent |
| Should be enormously reliable | Not flush with equipment |
Quick Summary
The Suzuki Alto (2009-2014) is a small, light, and frugal city car designed for urban driving and short trips. Launched in the UK at just £6,795, it features a three-cylinder 1.0-litre petrol engine with a choice of five-speed manual or four-speed automatic gearbox. The five-door body offers 129 litres of boot space and seats four adults comfortably. Whilst it scored three stars in Euro NCAP crash testing, the Alto prioritises economy and affordability over safety ratings and practicality.
Running costs are exceptionally low, with manual models achieving up to 64.2mpg and real-world figures around 50mpg. The K10B engine uses a timing chain, reducing maintenance costs significantly. Servicing is inexpensive, and parts are cheap due to the car's lightweight construction and small 155/65 R14 tyres. The Alto is easy to manoeuvre and park in urban environments, making it ideal for city driving. However, it feels less comfortable on longer motorway journeys, lacking refinement and power at higher speeds. A 2012 facelift brought minor improvements including engine upgrades and enhanced efficiency.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a reliable, economical city car for short trips and urban commuting, and those prioritising low running costs over space and equipment.
Not ideal for: Drivers requiring a spacious interior, frequent motorway travel, modern safety ratings, or comprehensive equipment and infotainment features.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Suzuki Alto | 3/5 | 4.4/5 | 31.4% | 4.0/5 |

| Toyota Aygo | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 34.8% | 4.3/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the Alto if: You're on a tight budget, seeking an economical city car for short trips and urban commuting, or prioritising low running costs and reliability over space and equipment.
Consider alternatives if: You require a spacious interior, frequently travel on motorways, need modern safety ratings, or want comprehensive equipment and infotainment features.
Competitive Position: The Suzuki Alto (2009-2014) is an affordable entry point into car ownership, offering exceptional running costs and reliability. However, it lags behind rivals in expert ratings and value scores. The Hyundai i10 outperforms it significantly with a 5/5 expert rating and 4.5/5 overall CarGurus rating, whilst the Kia Picanto and Toyota Aygo also offer better value propositions. The Alto's limited space, basic cabin, and poor motorway manners make it less versatile than competitors. For buyers willing to spend slightly more, alternatives like the Skoda Citigo or Seat Mii provide superior comfort and refinement on longer journeys.

4.4 Overall rating
(8 reviews)Car runs really well for the 2 days Ive had it, clutch has a higher biting point than Im used to but Ill get used to that in time, never drove a Suzuki before. Nice and quiet engine and only £20 for road tax!
ideal for the wife small and cheap to run good car
The steering is far too heavy. Power steering was introduced on later models. Also the drivers seat is too low and at a poor angle. The seat cannot be raised.
No central locking or air con or alloy wheels unfortunately
Cheap ,eco ,free tax, city car, easy to parking, best first car
