Suzuki Jimny (2018-2024) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Brilliant to drive off road | Noisy and uncomfortable on tarmac |
| Quirky and characterful looks | Cramped rear seats and tiny boot |
| There's nothing else quite like it | Over-inflated used prices |
Quick Summary
The Suzuki Jimny (2018-2024) is a uniquely characterful and capable off-roader that modernises the iconic boxy design with an achingly cool, miniature Mercedes G-Class stance. At under 3.5 metres long and weighing just 1,135kg, it's half a metre shorter than a Ford Fiesta yet boasts scarcely believable off-road ability thanks to its ladder frame chassis, switchable four-wheel drive system, and low-range gears. The non-turbo 1.5-litre petrol engine delivers 41.5mpg officially, with insurance group 13-14 and reasonable servicing costs making it affordable to run.
However, the Jimny is decidedly not a family car or daily commuter. It's noisy and uncomfortable on tarmac, with the engine buzzing at 3,500rpm at motorway speeds, whilst the cramped rear seats and tiny 377-litre boot mean you must choose between carrying people or belongings. Body roll is pronounced, and the ride feels lumpy despite soft suspension. Its short-lived UK availability and cult following have driven used prices well above original retail, making it an expensive proposition despite its modest origins.
Best for: Off-road enthusiasts, those seeking a unique and characterful vehicle with genuine all-terrain capability, and buyers willing to pay a premium for something genuinely different.
Not ideal for: Families needing practicality, daily commuters prioritising comfort, or budget-conscious buyers seeking value for money in the used market.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Suzuki Jimny | 2/5 | 4.7/5 | 16.6% | 3.8/5 |
| Dacia Duster | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 33.2% | 4.3/5 |
| Suzuki Ignis AllGrip | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 31.0% | 4.1/5 |
| Fiat Panda 4x4 | 3/5 | 4.3/5 | 36.3% | 4.0/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Jimny if: You're an off-road enthusiast seeking a unique and characterful vehicle with genuine all-terrain capability, and you're willing to pay a premium for something genuinely different.
Consider alternatives if: You need practicality for family use, prioritise comfort for daily commuting, or seek value for money in the used market.
Competitive Position: The Suzuki Jimny (2018-2024) stands apart from its rivals as a purpose-built off-roader with unmatched character and capability. Whilst the Dacia Duster offers better value and practicality with a five-door body and larger boot, and the Fiat Panda 4x4 provides more comfort and affordability, neither matches the Jimny's off-road prowess or cult appeal. The Suzuki Ignis AllGrip is more practical and road-focused. The Jimny's inflated used prices reflect its scarcity and desirability rather than value, making it a choice for enthusiasts rather than pragmatists.

4.8 Overall rating
(7 reviews)Great for countryside living with good urban ability. Will come with muddy tracks snowy hills and small enough to pass by on narrow lanes. Perfect for 2 adults and dogs.
For the age and the simplicity this vehicle is the perfect cheap but yet cheerful, the best 4x4 money can buy
Excellent little 4x4 excellent value . A bit short on extras . Camera , parking aids , alloy wheels , (would defo get seat conversion ) sound deadening could be up graded . All in all a cracking little 4x4 . A real little off roader for a fraction of a Range Rovers cost .
Just what I wanted. I am a Suzuki Jimmy fan- owned one for 14 years and this is the upgrade to the new model having waited one year for prices/availability to settle.
Good to look at , fun to drive and cheap to run.
