Suzuki Jimny (2018-2024) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Brilliant to drive off road	Noisy and uncomfortable on tarmac
Quirky and characterful looks	Cramped rear seats and tiny boot
There's nothing else quite like it	Over-inflated used prices

Quick Summary

The Suzuki Jimny (2018-2024) is a uniquely characterful compact off-roader that captures the essence of its legendary lineage whilst modernising its iconic boxy design. At under 3.5 metres long and weighing just 1,135kg, it's half a metre shorter than a Ford Fiesta, yet delivers scarcely believable off-road capability with its ladder frame chassis, switchable four-wheel drive system, and low-range gearing. The Jimny's achingly cool, miniature Mercedes G-Class stance gained an instant fan base, though its high CO2 emissions led to its withdrawal from the UK market after just two years.

However, this is not a practical family car or daily commuter. The rear seats are cramped, the 377-litre boot is tiny, and the non-turbo 1.5-litre engine produces 154g/km CO2 and feels strained at motorway speeds. On-road handling is compromised by significant body roll and an unsettled ride, whilst the cabin is noisy and uncomfortable on longer journeys. Yet if you want genuine off-road prowess combined with unmatched character and style, there is simply nothing else like it. Used examples currently command premium prices due to their cult following and scarcity in the UK market.

Best for: Off-road enthusiasts, buyers seeking a unique and characterful vehicle, and those prioritising adventure over practicality and comfort.

Not ideal for: Families requiring rear passenger space, commuters needing a comfortable daily driver, or buyers seeking a practical boot for regular cargo.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Jimny if: You're an off-road enthusiast seeking genuine adventure capability, prioritise unique character and style, and are willing to accept compromises in on-road comfort and practicality.

Consider alternatives if: You need a practical family vehicle, require comfortable rear passenger space, or seek a sensible daily commuter with a spacious boot.

Competitive Position: The Suzuki Jimny (2018-2024) stands apart from its rivals as a purpose-built off-roader with unmatched character and genuine all-terrain capability. Whilst the Dacia Duster offers better on-road manners and practicality, the Fiat Panda 4x4 provides more space, and the Suzuki Ignis AllGrip delivers superior comfort, none possess the Jimny's single-minded focus on durability and off-road utility. The Jimny is a cult classic that commands premium used prices, making it a significant investment. However, if authentic off-road adventure and distinctive style are your priorities, there is simply no alternative.
