Suzuki Jimny (2018-2024) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Brilliant to drive off road | Noisy and uncomfortable on tarmac |
| Quirky and characterful looks | Cramped rear seats and tiny boot |
| There's nothing else quite like it | Over-inflated used prices |
Quick Summary
The Suzuki Jimny (2018-2024) is a uniquely characterful, boxy off-roader that modernises the iconic design with an achingly cool miniature Mercedes G-Class stance. At under 3.5 metres long and weighing just 1,135kg, it's half a metre shorter than a Ford Fiesta yet delivers scarcely believable off-road capability with its ladder frame chassis, switchable four-wheel drive system, and low-range gears. The non-turbo 1.5-litre petrol engine produces 41.5mpg officially, with real-world figures around 35mpg in strenuous use, whilst insurance and servicing costs remain reasonable.
However, the Jimny is decidedly not a practical family car or daily commuter. The engine buzzes at 3,500rpm at motorway speeds, rear seats are cramped with limited access, and boot space is dire at just 377 litres—less than a VW Golf. The ride feels lumpy, body roll is pronounced, and on-road stability diminishes at speed. Regrettably, its short-lived UK availability and cult following have driven used prices well above original retail, making it an expensive proposition despite its unique appeal and excellent off-road credentials.
Best for: Off-road enthusiasts, adventure seekers, and buyers who prioritise character and capability over practicality and comfort, willing to pay a premium for uniqueness.
Not ideal for: Families needing rear passenger space, those requiring a spacious boot, daily commuters seeking comfort on longer journeys, or budget-conscious buyers seeking value for money.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Suzuki Jimny | 2/5 | 4.6/5 | 14.1% | 3.8/5 |
| Dacia Duster | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 33.2% | 4.3/5 |
| Suzuki Ignis AllGrip | 3/5 | 4.4/5 | 33.5% | 4.1/5 |
| Fiat Panda 4x4 | 3/5 | 4.1/5 | 30.9% | 3.9/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Jimny if: You're an off-road enthusiast or adventure seeker prioritising capability and character over practicality, and willing to pay a premium for a uniquely characterful vehicle with unmatched off-road credentials.
Consider alternatives if: You need rear passenger space, require a spacious boot, seek comfort on longer journeys, or prioritise value for money over exclusivity and off-road performance.
Competitive Position: The Suzuki Jimny (2018-2024) occupies a unique niche in the compact SUV market, offering unparalleled off-road capability and character that rivals cannot match. Whilst the Dacia Duster provides superior practicality and value, and the Suzuki Ignis and Fiat Panda offer better everyday usability, none deliver the Jimny's single-minded focus on durability and all-terrain utility. Its inflated used prices reflect cult status rather than value, making it a specialist choice for those whose needs align precisely with its strengths. For families or daily commuters, alternatives offer significantly better practicality and affordability.

4.6 Overall rating
(19 reviews)Excellent little 4x4 excellent value . A bit short on extras . Camera , parking aids , alloy wheels , (would defo get seat conversion ) sound deadening could be up graded . All in all a cracking little 4x4 . A real little off roader for a fraction of a Range Rovers cost .
For the age and the simplicity this vehicle is the perfect cheap but yet cheerful, the best 4x4 money can buy
Just what I wanted. I am a Suzuki Jimmy fan- owned one for 14 years and this is the upgrade to the new model having waited one year for prices/availability to settle.
Good to look at , fun to drive and cheap to run.
Great little 4x4 and Suzukis are so reliable.fantastic car
