Suzuki Jimny (2018-2024) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Brilliant to drive off road | Noisy and uncomfortable on tarmac |
| Quirky and characterful looks | Cramped rear seats and tiny boot |
| There's nothing else quite like it | Over-inflated used prices |
Quick Summary
The Suzuki Jimny (2018-2024) is a diminutive yet rugged off-roader that modernises the iconic boxy design into an achingly cool miniature Mercedes G-Class. At under 3.5 metres long and weighing only 1,135kg, it's half a metre shorter than a Ford Fiesta. The fourth-generation model gained an instant fan base for its distinctive styling, but was withdrawn from sale after just two years due to high CO2 emissions exceeding EU fleet average requirements. Despite its short-lived availability in the UK, the Jimny's unique appeal and cult following have driven used prices significantly higher than original retail values, making it a costly proposition for buyers seeking off-road capability.
The Jimny excels off-road with its ladder frame chassis, switchable four-wheel drive system, low-range gears, and impressive ground clearance, allowing it to tackle terrain that seems impossible. However, on-road practicality is severely compromised: the non-turbo 1.5-litre petrol engine produces just 90bhp, resulting in a 0-62mph time of around 12 seconds and high engine revs at motorway speeds. The interior is cramped, with uncomfortable rear seats offering minimal access, and boot space of just 377 litres—less than a VW Golf. Fuel economy of around 35-41mpg and low insurance (groups 13-14) provide some cost relief, but this is fundamentally a specialist vehicle, not a family car or daily commuter.
Best for: Off-road enthusiasts, adventure seekers, and buyers wanting a unique, characterful vehicle with genuine all-terrain capability regardless of cost.
Not ideal for: Families needing practicality, those prioritising on-road comfort, drivers requiring rear passenger space, or budget-conscious buyers seeking value for money.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Suzuki Jimny | 2/5 | 4.7/5 | 20.1% | 3.8/5 |
| Dacia Duster | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 33.5% | 4.3/5 |
| Suzuki Ignis AllGrip | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 31.1% | 4.1/5 |
| Fiat Panda 4x4 | 3/5 | 4.3/5 | 31.9% | 4.0/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Jimny if: You're an off-road enthusiast or adventure seeker wanting a unique, characterful vehicle with genuine all-terrain capability regardless of cost.
Consider alternatives if: You need practicality, prioritise on-road comfort, require rear passenger space, or seek value for money in a compact SUV.
Competitive Position: The Suzuki Jimny (2018-2024) occupies a unique niche as a specialist off-roader with unmatched character and capability. Whilst the Dacia Duster offers superior practicality, comfort, and value, and the Fiat Panda 4x4 and Suzuki Ignis AllGrip provide better everyday usability, none can match the Jimny's single-minded focus on durability and all-terrain utility. The Jimny's inflated used prices reflect its cult status and scarcity rather than objective value, making it a purchase driven by desire rather than practicality. If a new Jimny (purchased used) best suits your needs, there is simply no alternative.

4.8 Overall rating
(7 reviews)Great for countryside living with good urban ability. Will come with muddy tracks snowy hills and small enough to pass by on narrow lanes. Perfect for 2 adults and dogs.
For the age and the simplicity this vehicle is the perfect cheap but yet cheerful, the best 4x4 money can buy
Excellent little 4x4 excellent value . A bit short on extras . Camera , parking aids , alloy wheels , (would defo get seat conversion ) sound deadening could be up graded . All in all a cracking little 4x4 . A real little off roader for a fraction of a Range Rovers cost .
Just what I wanted. I am a Suzuki Jimmy fan- owned one for 14 years and this is the upgrade to the new model having waited one year for prices/availability to settle.
Good to look at , fun to drive and cheap to run.
