Suzuki Vitara (2015-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Good to drive, and comfortable too	Disappointing interior quality
Lively 1.4-litre engine	1.0-litre model is quite slow
Lots of space inside	Vague steering

Quick Summary

The Suzuki Vitara (2015-present) is a compact SUV that punches above its weight in the crowded small SUV market. Launched in 2015, it represents a considerable step down in size from its predecessor, positioning itself at the larger end of the compact SUV class. With excellent practicality, a fun driving experience, smart looks, and comprehensive equipment, the Vitara offers genuine appeal to buyers seeking something different from mainstream rivals like the Renault Captur and Nissan Juke.

The Vitara delivers a very reasonable driving experience for its class, with plenty of grip, traction, and agile body control. Engine options include a 1.6-litre diesel achieving around 55mpg, a 1.6-litre petrol at approximately 40mpg, a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol at similar economy, and a 1.0-litre turbo petrol at 45-50mpg. The availability of automatic gearboxes and four-wheel drive throughout the range adds versatility. Suzuki servicing costs are competitive, and petrol models feature timing chains for longevity, though diesel variants require timing belt changes every five years or 60,000 miles at considerable cost. The cabin offers good space and adjustment, though interior plastics feel disappointing compared to rivals, and the rear seats are better suited to two passengers rather than three.

Best for: Buyers seeking a practical, spacious, and enjoyable compact SUV with excellent reliability, those wanting four-wheel drive or automatic transmission options, and drivers prioritising driving engagement over premium cabin quality.

Not ideal for: Those demanding premium interior materials and finishes, buyers requiring a three-person rear bench, or those seeking the most economical fuel consumption without compromise.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Vitara if: You seek a practical, spacious, and enjoyable compact SUV with excellent reliability, want four-wheel drive or automatic transmission options, or prioritise driving engagement over premium cabin quality.

Consider alternatives if: You demand premium interior materials and finishes, require a three-person rear bench, or seek the most economical fuel consumption without compromise.

Competitive Position: The Suzuki Vitara (2015-present) is an excellent choice in the compact SUV market, offering a compelling combination of practicality, driving enjoyment, and reliability. Whilst rivals like the Seat Arona match it on overall ratings and the Citroen C3 Aircross offers better value deals, the Vitara distinguishes itself through superior driving dynamics, comprehensive equipment, and the unique availability of four-wheel drive and automatic gearboxes throughout the range. It represents a smart, engaging alternative to more obvious mainstream choices, delivering genuine pride of ownership alongside genuine pleasure in driving.
