Tesla Model Y (2022-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Excellent range and rapid charging | Would really benefit from a head-up display |
| Lots of standard kit | Firm ride |
| Roomy and practical | Interior quality not at BMW or Mercedes levels |
Quick Summary
The Tesla Model Y (2022-present) is a brilliant electric family SUV that combines spaciousness, confident driving dynamics, and cutting-edge technology. This mid-sized five-seater offers exceptional practicality with an 854-litre boot, masses of legroom for rear passengers, and an enormous frunk. The 2025 facelift brought a striking new design inspired by the Cybertruck, upgraded interior materials, improved suspension, and power-folding rear seats. Available in three powertrains—Rear-Wheel Drive, Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive, and Long Range All-Wheel Drive—the Model Y delivers impressive performance with 0-60mph times ranging from 4.6 to 5.6 seconds and real-world ranges of 240-340 miles depending on the variant.
Running costs are exceptionally competitive, with electricity costs as low as 2p per mile on off-peak tariffs and full charges costing under £7. The Model Y is very efficient for a powerful electric family car, and access to Tesla's Supercharger network—the cheapest public rapid chargers available—makes long-distance touring economical. Standard equipment is generous, including climate control, semi-autonomous driving capabilities, keyless entry, and a panoramic glass roof. Whilst the interior doesn't match the premium feel of BMW or Mercedes rivals, the 2025 update significantly improved cabin quality. The ride, previously harsh, is now more controlled and acceptable for family use, though still fairly firm.
Best for: Buyers seeking a spacious, practical electric family SUV with excellent range, rapid charging, and competitive pricing; those who value access to the Tesla Supercharger network; and families wanting a technologically advanced, efficient EV.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising the finest interior quality or most engaging driving dynamics; those wanting a head-up display as standard; or those preferring a softer, more compliant ride.

The Verdict
You should buy the Model Y if: You want a spacious, practical electric family SUV with excellent range and rapid charging; you value access to the Tesla Supercharger network; or you're seeking a technologically advanced, efficient EV at a competitive price.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the finest interior quality, the most engaging driving dynamics, or a softer ride; or you require a head-up display as standard.
Competitive Position: The Tesla Model Y is a comprehensive and competitively priced electric family SUV that remains near the top of any shortlist in this segment. Whilst the Skoda Enyaq iV offers superior ratings and the BMW iX3 provides classier interior finishes, the Model Y's combination of excellent range, rapid charging, generous standard equipment, and access to the extensive Tesla Supercharger network make it one of the best touring EVs available. The 2025 facelift has significantly improved ride comfort and cabin quality, addressing previous criticisms. For buyers prioritising practicality, efficiency, and value, the Model Y is an outstanding choice.

4 Overall rating
(2 reviews)I returned a Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo 4S to Porsche and bought the Tesla Model Y. The higher Y is easier to access (Im physically disabled) and exit, and its boot is more spacious to take my walker. It offers better visibility and for me more comfortable seating. The big screen on the Y can access all the info on the 3 screens of the Taycan, and in-car storage is much better. I dont regret the change.
Let’s start with the negatives. Drive and handling terrible. No parking sensors. Cheap leather interior. Rear view visual too small. The large iPad like control not issuable while driving. Voice command does not work well either. No dashboard behind the wheel. Cheap plastic exterior. All in all just too pricey. Positives. Good battery. Large boot space easy charging.
