Tesla Model Y (2022-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Excellent range and rapid charging	Would really benefit from a head-up display
Lots of standard kit	Firm ride
Roomy and practical	Interior quality not at BMW or Mercedes levels

Quick Summary

The Tesla Model Y (2022-present) is a spacious, electric mid-sized family SUV with five seats as standard. Available in Rear-Wheel Drive, Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive, and Long Range All-Wheel Drive variants, it offers impressive range from 311 to 387 miles depending on specification. The 2025 facelift brought a striking new design inspired by the Cybertruck, upgraded interior materials, improved suspension, and enhanced efficiency. With an 854-litre boot and enormous frunk, it ranks among the most practical five-seat electric SUVs available, offering excellent space for passengers and luggage alike.

The Model Y delivers confident, engaging driving dynamics with responsive steering and impressive acceleration across all variants. Whilst the ride is firm, the 2025 update significantly improved comfort for family use. Running costs are highly competitive, with real-world efficiency delivering approximately 7p per mile on standard domestic tariffs or as little as 2p per mile on off-peak rates. Competitively priced following its 2025 refresh, the Model Y combines excellent value, strong efficiency, rapid charging capability, and access to Tesla's superior Supercharger network, making it one of the most comprehensive pure electric family SUVs on the market.

Best for: Families seeking a spacious, efficient electric SUV with excellent range, rapid charging access, and comprehensive standard equipment; those prioritising practical touring capability and competitive pricing in the premium EV segment.

Not ideal for: Buyers requiring a head-up display, preferring a softer ride, or seeking interior quality matching BMW or Mercedes standards; those wanting Apple CarPlay or Android Auto integration.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Model Y if: You're seeking a spacious, efficient electric SUV with excellent range, rapid charging access, and comprehensive standard equipment; prioritising practical touring capability and competitive pricing in the premium EV segment.

Consider alternatives if: You require a head-up display, prefer a softer ride, seek interior quality matching BMW or Mercedes standards, or want Apple CarPlay or Android Auto integration.

Competitive Position: The Tesla Model Y is a brilliant electric family SUV that remains one of the most comprehensive options in its class. Whilst the Skoda Enyaq iV edges ahead with a marginally higher expert rating and user satisfaction, the Model Y's superior range, rapid charging speeds, and access to the excellent Supercharger network make it highly competitive. The Ford Mustang Mach-E and BMW iX3 offer alternative approaches, but the Model Y's combination of practicality, efficiency, standard equipment, and value positioning keeps it near the top of any electric SUV shortlist.
