Tesla Model Y (2022-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Excellent range and rapid charging	Would really benefit from a head-up display
Lots of standard kit	Firm ride
Roomy and practical	Interior quality not at BMW or Mercedes levels

Quick Summary

The Tesla Model Y (2022-present) is a spacious, practical electric family SUV that combines impressive performance with cutting-edge technology. The 2025 facelift brought significant improvements, including a refreshed design inspired by the Cybertruck, upgraded interior materials, enhanced suspension, and power-folding rear seats. Available in Rear-Wheel Drive and Long Range variants, it offers official WLTP ranges from 311 to 387 miles, with real-world figures of 240–340 miles depending on the model. The Model Y delivers confident, engaging driving dynamics with responsive steering and smooth brake regeneration, though the ride remains relatively firm despite recent improvements.

Practicality is exceptional, with an 854-litre boot, spacious rear seats featuring an 8-inch touchscreen, and an enormous frunk. The large landscape touchscreen serves as the control hub for most vehicle functions, offering intuitive navigation and access to the Tesla Supercharger network. Running costs are highly competitive, with electricity costs as low as 2p per mile on off-peak tariffs and a full charge costing around £7–£19 depending on your tariff. The Model Y remains one of the best value long-range electric SUVs available, with strong residual values and excellent efficiency for its class.

Best for: Families seeking a spacious, practical electric SUV with excellent range and rapid charging capabilities, those prioritising access to the Tesla Supercharger network, and buyers wanting competitive pricing in the premium EV segment.

Not ideal for: Those requiring a head-up display, preferring a softer ride, or seeking interior quality matching BMW or Mercedes standards, or drivers wanting Apple CarPlay or Android Auto integration.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Model Y if: You're seeking a spacious, practical electric SUV with excellent range and rapid charging, prioritising access to the Tesla Supercharger network, or wanting competitive pricing in the premium EV segment.

Consider alternatives if: You require a head-up display, prefer a softer ride, seek interior quality matching BMW or Mercedes standards, or need Apple CarPlay or Android Auto integration.

Competitive Position: The Tesla Model Y is a comprehensive electric family SUV offering excellent practicality, impressive range, and competitive pricing. Whilst the Skoda Enyaq iV edges ahead with a higher expert rating and superior interior quality, and the Ford Mustang Mach-E and BMW iX3 offer more engaging driving dynamics, the Model Y remains a strong contender. Its access to the extensive Tesla Supercharger network, strong efficiency, and competitive finance options make it a compelling choice for families prioritising long-distance capability and charging convenience over premium cabin finishes.
