Reviewed a 2022 Tesla Model Y on 10 Aug 2022
I returned a Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo 4S to Porsche and bought the Tesla Model Y. The higher Y is easier to access (Im physically disabled) and exit, and its boot is more spacious to take my walker. It offers better visibility and for me more comfortable seating. The big screen on the Y can access all the info on the 3 screens of the Taycan, and in-car storage is much better. I dont regret the change.

Let’s start with the negatives. Drive and handling terrible. No parking sensors. Cheap leather interior. Rear view visual too small. The large iPad like control not issuable while driving. Voice command does not work well either. No dashboard behind the wheel. Cheap plastic exterior. All in all just too pricey. Positives. Good battery. Large boot space easy charging.

Tesla Model Y (2022-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Excellent range and rapid charging | Would really benefit from a head-up display |
| Lots of standard kit | Firm ride |
| Roomy and practical | Interior quality not at BMW or Mercedes levels |
Quick Summary
The Tesla Model Y (2022-present) is a brilliant electric, mid-sized family SUV that comes with five seats as standard. The 2025 facelift brought a drastically different look inspired by the Tesla Cybertruck, upgraded interior materials, tweaked suspension, better efficiency, and power-folding rear seats. Available in three variants—Rear-Wheel Drive, Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive, and Long Range All-Wheel Drive—it offers official WLTP ranges from 311 to 387 miles. The Model Y is one of the most practical cars in its class, with spacious accommodation for passengers and an enormous 854-litre boot, plus a substantial frunk. Perceived quality has improved noticeably with the 2025 update, featuring soft-touch finishes and ambient lighting, though it doesn't quite match the BMW iX3 or Porsche Macan for cabin quality.
The Model Y is very efficient, delivering real-world ranges of 240-340 miles depending on the variant, with fuel costs as low as 2p per mile on off-peak electricity tariffs. It's fast and enjoyable to drive, with grippy, neutral handling and fairly brutal acceleration, though the steering isn't as playful as the Jaguar I-PACE or BMW iX3. The 2025 update has improved ride comfort significantly, though it remains quite firm. Tesla Superchargers are the cheapest public rapid chargers available, and the Model Y is competitively priced compared to other premium electric SUVs. It comes very well equipped as standard with climate control, semi-autonomous driving technology, keyless entry, and a panoramic glass roof.
Best for: Families seeking a spacious, practical electric SUV with excellent range, rapid charging capability, and competitive pricing; those who value access to the Tesla Supercharger network and appreciate cutting-edge technology.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising the finest interior quality, those who require a head-up display, or drivers who prefer a softer, more compliant ride; those needing Apple CarPlay or Android Auto integration.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tesla Model Y | 4/5 | 4.0/5 | 37.4% | 4.4/5 |
| Skoda Enyaq iV | 5/5 | N/A | 28.6% | 4.0/5 |
| BMW iX3 | 4/5 | N/A | 35.9% | 3.9/5 |
| Ford Mustang Mach-E | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 38.9% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Model Y if: You're seeking a spacious, practical electric SUV with excellent range, rapid charging capability, and competitive pricing; you value access to the Tesla Supercharger network and appreciate cutting-edge technology.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the finest interior quality, require a head-up display, prefer a softer ride, or need Apple CarPlay or Android Auto integration.
Competitive Position: The Tesla Model Y is a comprehensive pure electric family SUV that remains one of the most compelling options in its class. Whilst the Skoda Enyaq iV offers excellent all-round appeal and the BMW iX3 provides superior interior quality and handling refinement, the Model Y's combination of spaciousness, efficiency, rapid charging speeds, and access to the excellent Tesla Supercharger network make it highly competitive. The Ford Mustang Mach-E offers similar appeal with strong user ratings, but the Model Y's practicality and charging infrastructure give it a significant advantage for long-distance touring. It should be near the top of any shortlist for those considering an electric family SUV in this price range.
