An automated manual transmission is available, though the manual gearbox with its light clutch and easy shift action is more popular. Around town, the Aygo is extremely easy to drive and manoeuvre, with comfortable suspension that tackles small bumps well. However, at higher speeds, the engine works hard and becomes noisy and strained, making it less relaxed on motorways than rivals like the Kia Picanto and Volkswagen Up. Running costs are exceptionally low, with no VED for pre-April 2017 models and inexpensive servicing, tyres, and insurance. The petrol engine uses a timing chain, avoiding costly belt replacement bills.
