Toyota Aygo (2014-2022) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Excellent reliability, as you'd expect of a Toyota | Noisy on the motorway |
| Very economical to fuel and inexpensive to run | So-so Euro NCAP safety rating |
| Easy to drive and park | Small boot, even for a city car |
Quick Summary
The Toyota Aygo (2014-2022) is a compact, efficient, and reliable city car designed for urban driving and short commutes. This second-generation model retained the strengths of its predecessor, including its compact footprint and low running costs, whilst adding more playful exterior styling and modern features. Available in three and five-door versions (later five-door only), the Aygo shares its underpinnings with the Citroën C1 and Peugeot 108. It offers a four-seater configuration with 168 litres of boot space, though access is limited by a high loading lip. The interior is straightforward and well laid out, with optional colour-coded inserts adding visual appeal.
Powered by a single 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine producing 68bhp (later 71bhp), the Aygo accelerates from 0-62mph in around 14 seconds and averages more than 60mpg, easily returning over 50mpg in real-world driving. An automated manual transmission is available, though the manual gearbox with its light clutch and easy shift is more popular. The Aygo excels in town, proving extremely easy to manoeuvre, but struggles on motorways where the engine becomes noisy and strained. Running costs are exceptionally low, with no VED for pre-April 2017 models, inexpensive servicing at around £145, and small, affordable tyres. The timing chain engine eliminates costly belt replacement concerns. Toyota's excellent reliability and long warranty make this an outstanding choice for budget-conscious buyers prioritising dependability over driving dynamics.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers, new drivers, urban commuters, and those prioritising reliability and low running costs over motorway performance.
Not ideal for: Drivers requiring frequent motorway travel, those seeking premium badge appeal, or buyers needing a spacious boot and rear legroom.

The Verdict
You should buy the Aygo if: You're a budget-conscious buyer, new driver, urban commuter, or prioritise reliability and low running costs over motorway performance.
Consider alternatives if: You require frequent motorway travel, seek premium badge appeal, or need a spacious boot and rear legroom.
Competitive Position: The Toyota Aygo (2014-2022) is a strong contender in the city car market, offering exceptional reliability, outstanding running costs, and ease of use in urban environments. Whilst rivals like the Hyundai i10 and Volkswagen Up offer superior driving dynamics and premium feel, the Aygo's Toyota reliability, low maintenance costs, and excellent value as a used car make it an outstanding choice for budget-conscious buyers and new drivers. The Kia Picanto provides similar practicality, but the Aygo's proven dependability and lower running costs give it a clear advantage for those prioritising long-term ownership costs.

Great little car. Well built. Very reliable. Bit quirky to look at but that’s part if the charm
Great small 1st car for new driver. Description was spot on. Extremely pleased with everything. Went for the Toyota over similar models due to reliability.
The colour of the vehicle is what attracted me to view same including the interior which is amazing.I have had 3 other Aygo cars over the years so I know exactly what the car has to offer. I would recommend this particular car to any perspective buyers.
Really enjoying the car features, economical and suits my needs.
Excellent value. Better than others I saw for the same price. Reverse camera is brill, air con etc. drives lovely and more roomy than you’d think. Cheap on parts and labour and cheap on petrol. Perfect bit of luxury for me as a carer I don’t struggle at all to pay for. Had one before and would buy one again
