Toyota Aygo (2014-2022) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Excellent reliability, as you'd expect of a Toyota | Noisy on the motorway |
| Very economical to fuel and inexpensive to run | So-so Euro NCAP safety rating |
| Easy to drive and park | Small boot, even for a city car |
Quick Summary
The Toyota Aygo (2014-2022) is a compact, efficient, and reliable city car designed to compete with popular models like the Fiat 500 and Volkswagen Up. This second-generation model, sharing underpinnings with the Citroen C1 and Peugeot 108, retains its predecessor's strengths of a compact footprint and low running costs, while adding more playful styling and modern features. It was named the best used car for new drivers in 2024. While offering decent space up front, the rear is cramped, and it's a strict four-seater. Its 168-litre boot is small for the class, with a high loading lip limiting practicality, and the interior, though straightforward, isn't as premium as some rivals.
Power comes from a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine (68-71bhp), offering modest performance but excellent real-world fuel economy of over 50mpg. Available with manual or an automated manual transmission, the Aygo excels in city driving with its ease of manoeuvre and comfortable ride over small bumps. However, it can feel noisy and strained at higher speeds, making it less ideal for motorways compared to some competitors. Running costs are a major strength, with many models offering free VED, low service costs, cheap tyres, and a timing chain engine for reduced long-term maintenance. Tech features include LED daytime running lights, air-conditioning on higher trims, a retractable canvas roof option, and a responsive 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, though it lacks Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.
Best for: City drivers, new drivers, those seeking low running costs, reliability, and an easy-to-drive and park vehicle.
Not ideal for: Buyers needing significant boot space, frequent motorway drivers, those desiring a more refined driving experience, or requiring Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.

The Verdict
You should buy the Aygo if: You're on a budget, seeking a reliable, efficient, and easy-to-drive city car, especially for new drivers, and prioritising low running costs.
Consider alternatives if: You need more boot space, frequently drive on motorways, desire a more refined driving experience, or require smartphone integration like Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.
Competitive Position: The Toyota Aygo (2014-2022) stands out in the city car segment for its excellent reliability, exceptionally low running costs, and ease of use, making it ideal for urban environments and new drivers. While rivals like the VW Up or Kia Picanto might offer a more refined motorway experience or slightly better interior finish, the Aygo's strong reliability record and a timing chain engine contribute to long-term peace of mind and minimal maintenance costs. Its compact size and optional Funroof also add to its appeal as a fun and practical city companion.

(42 reviews)Great little car. Well built. Very reliable. Bit quirky to look at but that’s part if the charm
Really enjoying the car features, economical and suits my needs.
Great small 1st car for new driver. Description was spot on. Extremely pleased with everything. Went for the Toyota over similar models due to reliability.
The colour of the vehicle is what attracted me to view same including the interior which is amazing.I have had 3 other Aygo cars over the years so I know exactly what the car has to offer. I would recommend this particular car to any perspective buyers.
Excellent value. Better than others I saw for the same price. Reverse camera is brill, air con etc. drives lovely and more roomy than you’d think. Cheap on parts and labour and cheap on petrol. Perfect bit of luxury for me as a carer I don’t struggle at all to pay for. Had one before and would buy one again
