Toyota Aygo (2005-2014) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Easy to drive and simple to park	Lacks some modern safety kit
Later cars are well equipped	Tiny boot, even for a city car
Very reliable	Not as much fun to drive as some small cars

Quick Summary

The Toyota Aygo (2005-2014) is an affordable city car that delivers hallmark Toyota reliability without fuss. This lightweight urban runabout, developed jointly with PSA Peugeot Citroën, measures just 3,405mm long and offers a straightforward, easy-to-drive package ideal for town motoring. Available in three-door and five-door configurations, it features a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine producing 67bhp, with a 1.4-litre diesel option introduced in 2006. The Aygo's compact footprint makes it exceptionally easy to manoeuvre and park, whilst its simple design ensures minimal maintenance hassles.

Running costs are impressively low, with petrol versions averaging over 50mpg and diesel variants exceeding 60mpg in real-world driving. Both engines use timing chains, reducing long-term maintenance costs significantly. Replacement parts are inexpensive, and servicing is straightforward at any local garage. Later models offer improved equipment including air conditioning and alloy wheels, though these remain optional on earlier examples. Whilst the 139-litre boot is cramped and the driving experience lacks excitement, the Aygo represents exceptional value for budget-conscious buyers seeking a dependable, frugal city car with Toyota's renowned reliability pedigree.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers, first-time car owners, urban commuters, and those prioritising reliability and low running costs over driving excitement.

Not ideal for: Drivers needing substantial boot space, those seeking engaging driving dynamics, or buyers requiring comprehensive modern safety features as standard.

Consider alternatives if: You require substantial boot space, desire engaging driving dynamics, or need comprehensive modern safety features as standard on all trims.

Competitive Position: The Toyota Aygo (2005-2014) is a strong contender in the budget city car segment, offering exceptional value, hallmark Toyota reliability, and impressively low running costs. Whilst rivals like the Skoda Citigo and Hyundai i10 score higher for expert ratings, the Aygo's user rating of 4.8 out of 5 demonstrates genuine owner satisfaction.
