The Toyota Aygo (2014-2022), the second-generation model, is a compact, efficient, and reliable city car designed to compete with rivals such as the Fiat 500, Volkswagen Up, and Skoda Citigo. It retains the strengths of its predecessor, including its compact footprint and low running costs, whilst adding more playful exterior styling and modern features. Available in three-door and five-door versions (later slimmed to five-door only), the Aygo offers decent front space but cramped rear seating as a strict four-seater. Boot space is limited at 168 litres with a high loading lip, though the interior is straightforward and well laid out with optional colour-coded inserts adding appeal.

Powered by a single 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine producing 68bhp (later increased to 71bhp), the Aygo accelerates from 0-62mph in around 14 seconds with a top speed of 99mph. It averages more than 60mpg claimed, easily returning over 50mpg in real-world driving. An automated manual transmission is available, though the manual remains more popular with its light clutch and easy shift action. Around town, the Aygo excels with excellent manoeuvrability and comfort, but struggles at higher speeds where the engine becomes noisy and strained. Running costs are exceptionally low, with no VED for pre-April 2017 models, inexpensive servicing around £145, and small, affordable tyres. The timing chain engine eliminates costly belt replacement concerns. In 2024, CarGurus named the Aygo the best used car for new drivers.
