Toyota Auris (2007-2012) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| A sensible, reliable buy | Dull driving experience |
| Economical 1.4-litre diesel | Lots of hard and scratchy plastics in the cabin |
| The hybrid works well around town | Anonymous looks, especially before the 2010 facelift |
Quick Summary
The Toyota Auris (2007-2012) is a straightforward family hatchback designed to replace the legendary Corolla. Available with a range of petrol, diesel, and petrol-electric hybrid engines, it prioritises practicality and reliability over driving excitement. The car offers reasonable interior space with impressively spacious rear seats and a 354-litre boot, though the cabin features hard plastics and limited storage solutions. A facelift in 2010 brought styling tweaks and suspension improvements, with the range eventually streamlined to T2, TR, and SR trims, plus hybrid T4 and T Spirit variants.
The Auris delivers what it promises: sensible, dependable family transport at a very reasonable price. The 1.6-litre petrol is the most common engine, whilst the 1.4-litre diesel offers excellent fuel economy around 56.4mpg. The hybrid model performs particularly well in urban driving. However, the car's high centre of gravity makes it prone to body roll through corners, and crosswinds can affect stability. Running costs are modest, with Toyota specialists offering competitive servicing rates. As a used car, it represents solid value for budget-conscious buyers seeking uncomplicated, reliable transport, though it lacks the driving engagement or premium appeal of rivals like the Ford Focus or Volkswagen Golf.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking reliable, practical family transport; those prioritising economy and low running costs; drivers wanting a sensible, no-nonsense car for commuting or family duties.
Not ideal for: Drivers seeking an engaging driving experience, premium cabin materials, or distinctive styling; those wanting a car that puts a smile on their face rather than simply doing the job.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Toyota Auris | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 30.7% | 4.0/5 |
| Ford Focus | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 33.0% | 4.5/5 |
| Volkswagen Golf | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 32.7% | 4.4/5 |
| Vauxhall Astra | 4/5 | 4.0/5 | 31.9% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Auris if: You're seeking reliable, practical family transport on a budget; prioritising economy and low running costs; or wanting a sensible, no-nonsense car for commuting or family duties.
Consider alternatives if: You want an engaging driving experience, premium cabin materials, distinctive styling, or a car that provides emotional appeal beyond basic functionality.
Competitive Position: The Toyota Auris (2007-2012) is a competent but uninspiring choice in the family hatchback segment. Whilst it offers excellent reliability, practicality, and value for money, it falls short against rivals like the Ford Focus for driving dynamics and the Volkswagen Golf for premium appeal. The Auris excels as a sensible, dependable workhorse for budget-conscious buyers who prioritise function over form, but those seeking a more engaging or characterful driving experience will find better alternatives. Its economical diesel engines and hybrid option provide genuine appeal for cost-conscious motorists, making it a solid choice for practical, no-fuss family transport.

4.6 Overall rating
(7 reviews)Reliable car that feels safe and secure. Very spacious for a hatchback and a large boot.
It’s a nice looking car. But there are some annoying things about the Auris 1- the Arm rest in back seats is not that strong.2- it is just ok when driving it; it will get you from Point A to B but zero fun. However the Auris is the best hatchback car for me. And it is very reliable car.
Great size for small family & very reliable Good price
Toyota Auris is a great looking ,reliable car , but the prices are very high.
Very reliable and spacious inside.performs really perfectly. Nice one please
