Lovely to drive, very quiet and smooth acceleration. You don’t notice gear changes at all. Great features and technology. The only drawback for me was the limited space in the boot.

Toyota C-HR (2016-2023) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Eye-catching coupe-like styling | Cramped and claustrophobic rear seats |
| Very fuel-efficient and affordable to run | Small boot |
| Strong performance from the 2.0-litre model | Fiddly touchscreen infotainment |
Quick Summary
The Toyota C-HR (2016-2023), standing for Coupe High-Rider, is a distinctive small SUV that combines striking, unconventional styling with practical hybrid technology. Most C-HRs feature a full hybrid powertrain blending petrol and electric power, similar to the Toyota Prius. The first-generation model received a facelift in late 2019, bringing improved infotainment and enhanced hybrid system efficiency. With its angular design, flowing curves, and unique styling elements, the C-HR stands out significantly from conventional SUVs on the market.
The C-HR excels in driving dynamics and fuel economy, offering smooth steering, responsive handling, and impressive efficiency of around 50mpg for the 2.0-litre hybrid and up to 55mpg for the 1.8-litre variant. Toyota's reputation for reliability, combined with reasonable servicing costs and strong residual values, makes it one of the cheapest small SUVs to own and operate. However, practicality is compromised by a small 377-litre boot and claustrophobic rear seats with limited headroom, making it less suitable for families requiring substantial luggage space or frequent rear-seat use.
Best for: Style-conscious buyers seeking an efficient, enjoyable-to-drive small SUV with low running costs, those prioritising reliability and residual value, and drivers who rarely transport large amounts of luggage.
Not ideal for: Families needing spacious rear seating and large boot capacity, those requiring straightforward infotainment systems, or buyers prioritising maximum practicality over distinctive styling.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Toyota C-HR | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 34.5% | 4.3/5 |
| Seat Ateca | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 33.6% | 4.4/5 |
| Nissan Qashqai | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 35.0% | 4.4/5 |
| Honda HR-V | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 35.2% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the C-HR if: You value distinctive styling and driving enjoyment, seek excellent fuel economy and low running costs, prioritise reliability and residual value, and rarely require extensive luggage space.
Consider alternatives if: You need spacious rear seating and a large boot, prefer intuitive infotainment systems, or require maximum practicality for family use.
Competitive Position: The Toyota C-HR (2016-2023) is a compelling choice in the small SUV segment, offering distinctive styling and engaging driving dynamics that set it apart from more conventional rivals. Whilst the Seat Ateca provides superior practicality and the Honda HR-V boasts higher user satisfaction, the C-HR's hybrid efficiency, strong reliability reputation, and excellent value retention make it an attractive proposition for style-conscious buyers. The Nissan Qashqai offers more space, but the C-HR's unique character and low running costs provide genuine appeal for those willing to compromise on boot capacity for a more distinctive ownership experience.
