Toyota Land Cruiser (2009-2023) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| No-nonsense 4x4 with serious off-road ability | Costly to fuel, especially cars made before the 2020 update |
| Reliability the likes of which Land Rover owners can only dream of | Clumsy and unsophisticated to drive on the road |
| Top-spec models are very well equipped | The Invincible spec model is expensive |
Quick Summary
The Toyota Land Cruiser (2009-2023) is a no-nonsense, body-on-frame 4x4 with an unrivalled reputation for reliability and serious off-road capability. This generation arrived in Britain in 2009 and was replaced in 2024, having been powered exclusively by diesel engines throughout its UK market life. The 3.0-litre D-4D engine is tough and dependable, whilst the 2.8-litre engine introduced in 2015 offers improved performance and economy. Most versions offer seven seats, with generous space in the front two rows, though the rearmost seats suit children better. With the rear seats folded, boot capacity reaches an impressive 640 litres.
On tarmac, the Land Cruiser feels ponderous and unwieldy, with vague steering and considerable body roll when cornering. The interior lacks the plush ambience of rivals like the Mercedes GLE, though it is solidly constructed. Running costs are significant, with early 3.0-litre models achieving around 30mpg in real-world driving and annual tax bills reaching £565-£580. The 2015 2.8-litre variant improves both performance and economy, whilst post-2020 updates further refine the driving experience. For those prioritising reliability and off-road prowess over road manners and luxury, the Land Cruiser remains an exceptional choice.
Best for: Off-road enthusiasts, buyers valuing reliability above all else, those requiring serious 4x4 capability, and families needing spacious seven-seat transport.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising on-road comfort and sophistication, those seeking plush cabin ambience, or buyers concerned with fuel economy and running costs.

| Toyota Land Cruiser | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 22.6% | 4.0/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the Land Cruiser if: You're an off-road enthusiast, value reliability above all else, require serious 4x4 capability, or need spacious seven-seat family transport.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise on-road comfort and sophistication, seek plush cabin ambience, or are concerned with fuel economy and running costs.
Competitive Position: The Toyota Land Cruiser (2009-2023) is a formidable contender in the large 4x4 market, offering unmatched reliability and genuine off-road prowess. Whilst the Land Rover Discovery provides superior on-road comfort and the Jeep Grand Cherokee delivers better value, the Land Cruiser's legendary durability and no-nonsense engineering make it the preferred choice for serious off-road use. The Mitsubishi Shogun offers similar capabilities at comparable pricing, but the Toyota's reputation for longevity remains unbeaten. For buyers willing to accept compromises on road manners and running costs in exchange for bulletproof reliability, the Land Cruiser is unrivalled.

4.6 Overall rating
(5 reviews)A good all round 4x4. Although it will mostly be used for dogs and horses, it is comfortable and economical enough to be a general family car. Looking forward to driving it and enjoying it!
Normal every day car that can take me from point a to point B. And in a good condition with very good engine and first body.
Bought for towing purposes, at which it is great and makes the drive feel safe and comfortable. A large vehicle, but with good vision from it. As it is a towing vehicle it is just a pity that the boot door opens sideways rather than upwards as the door then hits the trailer behind the car.
very reliable, dependable and cost effective. it can never win races but it will definitely take you wherever you want to go. love this vehicle!!
The Vehicle Appearance seemed very good but the Price & Mileage were to High.
