Toyota Yaris Cross Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Hybrid sips fuel, especially around town	Quite cramped in the back
Toyota's warranty brings peace of mind	Not as much fun to drive as a Ford Puma
Usefully big boot for a small SUV	Ride comfort can be firm

Quick Summary

The Toyota Yaris Cross is a compact SUV that combines the city-friendly footprint of a small hatchback with sufficient interior space for a young family and a high driving position. Available exclusively as a petrol-electric hybrid, it offers two power outputs: a 114bhp version and a more powerful 129bhp option. The hybrid system delivers excellent fuel economy, achieving between 55mpg and 60mpg in everyday driving, with urban driving particularly benefiting from regenerative braking. An optional all-wheel-drive system with an electric rear motor provides extra traction for rural or slippery conditions.

The interior is logically laid out and well assembled, though somewhat understated in places. Boot capacity stands at 350 litres to the parcel shelf or 460 litres to the roof, with a clever split false floor that can be adjusted to different heights. The infotainment system has improved significantly over time and includes wireless smartphone integration across the range. Running costs are reasonable, with servicing priced between mainstream and premium brands, and a timing chain that lasts the car's lifetime. Toyota's warranty provides reassurance, making the Yaris Cross a sensible, cost-effective choice for those prioritising efficiency and reliability.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking low running costs, families wanting a compact SUV with hybrid efficiency, and those valuing Toyota reliability and warranty coverage.

Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising driving engagement, those needing generous rear-seat space, or buyers seeking a firmer ride quality.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Yaris Cross if: You prioritise low running costs and hybrid efficiency, value Toyota reliability and warranty coverage, or seek a compact SUV suitable for families and commuters.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise driving engagement, require generous rear-seat space, or prefer a softer ride quality.

Competitive Position: The Toyota Yaris Cross is a sensible, cost-effective compact SUV that excels in fuel efficiency and reliability. Whilst the Ford Puma offers superior driving dynamics and the Renault Captur provides more versatility, the Yaris Cross stands out for its hybrid technology and Toyota's reassuring warranty. It represents a practical choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking dependable, economical transport, though it lacks the driving engagement of its sportier rivals.
